So I'm planning on developing a game just for myself and a few friends on Android and I was wondering if it still required a license to just create the APK and put it on my phone (new to Unity sorry if the question is remedial)
You need the Unity license for Android is all. Unlike iPhone where you need additional junk from Apple. You can then build it right onto the phone and/or build the apk and give that to your buddies.
