It appears to me that an Android Pro license is needed to develop for Ouya, but I wanted to ask just to make sure. Is it true? Is there any way around this? As of yet my projects haven’t required the features in Unity Pro, and I already have the free Android license for Unity 3.x. Paying $1500 for Unity Pro + $1500 for Android Pro just to be able to export to Ouya would make me very sad. Is this requirement set by Unity or is due to requirements made by Ouya?
How did you get this understanding?
When I click on ‘Build Application’ from the Ouya Panel in Unity after importing their package, it tells me that ‘Building Player from editor scripts requires Unity PRO’. Then I went looking on the web to find out if Android Pro was required, and I found a reference on this ouya forum about Android Pro being needed for plugin support:
http://www.my-ouya.net/forum/ouya-unity/unity-to-android-export-for-ouya-t35-10.html
But I thought maybe there is another way to build the player without Android Pro and maybe the forum was only referring to needing the pro license for tech support?
Hmm, I’m not so sure. Plugins are a pro/mobile feature only. I think building to Android even with Basic should allow that. I’m not 100% sure now, but I think I was able to use plugins in Android before I went Pro.
Here:
For Ouya you will be building using the Android platform so it shouldn’t be a problem.
K.
Edit: you need to select Android and then press Switch Platform.
In my case I don’t need to worry about plugins, so I won’t worry about that for now.
But about successfully getting an Ouya build: I already have the Android platform selected in my Unity build settings. But the Ouya package has its own “Ouya Panel” that is used for making the Ouya specific Android build. And its the ‘Build Application’ button in that panel that says I need Unity Pro. Perhaps I need to find out from an Ouya forum on how to get that to work, but thought I should verify with someone from Unity if, in fact, Unity Pro is intended to be required for exporting to the Ouya platform.
Yes, I found that, but since I have android pro it doesn’t give me grief.
Nope, you don’t need Unity or Android Pro to use the OUYA ODK Unity package. That top “Build Application” button on the OUYA Panel is just for convenience - that button runs the Java compile, then the NDK compile, then does a normal Unity Build. But you can’t have a script call the Unity Build without Pro, which is how that button is hooked up. So instead what you need to do without Pro is first use the Compile button in that same panel (which does the Java and then NDK compiles), and when it’s done manually do a normal Unity Build as you normally would.
Thanks for that man. Clears things up. Will be ordering an Ouya next week.
Hey Dreamwriter I tried the method which you have suggested and placed my APK into the downloads folder but I can not seem to access the apk for some reason? Do you know why this is?
Thank you
