Animated model position/rotation not working

I’ve imported an animated fbx model and it works great except that I am unable to set the initial position/rotation in the inspector.

As soon as the game starts these changes are ignored and the model is reverted to it’s origin position.

I’ve even tried placing the animated object inside of an empty game object and moving the game object in the inspector.

Under the Animator component, unchecking “Apply Root Motion” was the answer.
