I have a lot of animations for a human model. I also have other biped models such as a big troll and a small goblin. However, the latter have different riggs than the human who all the animations work for.
Would it be feasible, possible, and successful to take out the rigg from the human model, and put it in the large troll and small goblin, and have the animations work exactly the same?
I want to be able to reuse the human model’s animations across all my models. I looked into retarget software such as Maya, MotionBuilder, or other alternatives. However, they aren’t perfect and require a lot of work.
If I can use the same rigg, wouldn’t that work even better??
Maya isn’t a retarget software, neither MotionBuilder. If you are using bipeds across all your characters you can share the same biped animations. In case you are using different kind of rigs/bones, 3ds max have few tools to accomplish what you need.
I thought they both had animation retargeting though?
I have one human rigg i need to use on all of my biped characters. So if I can put that same rigg of a human into say, a large troll, then that’ll work and i wont need retargeting. I just dont know if that would work. Arms are longer, etc. etc.
Yes It will work. You may need to tweak the result tho. I think maya got retargeting in v. 2011.
Softimage has MOTOR, there are cool demos about retargeting soldier animation to mech and then to lamp post
There is free SI mod tool, you may check it out if you’re not afraid of modern software (opposite to maya/max)
