Animations only working in unscaled time mode

For whatever reason, animations that I make in Unity’s animation system don’t work unless I change the update mode to “unscaled time” in the animator component. Has anyone else experienced this, and can help me out?

Wow, it worked like some kind of magic. Animations now play no matter what update mode I have. Wonder why Unity sets the timescale to 0 by default.
