Annual costs to use the Unity engine?

What’s this I’m hearing about annual costs in order to develop with Unity? I’m hoping I heard wrong, but it’s been said that in addition to the one-time payment of $1500 for a Unity3D license, there’s an annual cost to use it, a cost that’s in quadruple digits? Does anybody know anything about this? Thanks!

I think you’ve maybe heard wrong.

You have to pay for major upgrades, and with multiple licenses, that can add up. I started with Unity 1.5 seven years ago and with iOS and Android licenses I think I’ve spent about $7000 so far.

Perhaps you heard about the gambling license or priority support contracts or console licenses or something like that? Perhaps you mis-heard about the subscription deal?

… if you wish to upgrade.

Unity now offer pay by month option but you don’t get to keep licence and needs a 12 month commitment.

Thanks, guys. I’m glad this wasn’t the case, because I thought it was rather fishy.

I have another question. If you’re developing for a console such as PS4 and WiiU, are there any extra fees for that or will they be included with the purchase of the Unity license since they are in partnership? I’m trying to gather as much correct information as possible. Thanks again!

You need to be a registered developer with the console companies to get any information about that.

And really, if you want correct information, don’t ask here.

It’s more likely to be the other way around: http://www.vg247.com/2013/07/04/wii-u-nintendo-gives-free-unity-license-to-eshop-studios-allows-self-publishing-says-dev/

and keep in mind that console development usually requires getting devkits:
