i generally just like taking a concept and turning it into reality and really trying for high-quality results. The purpose of this thread is for opinions to be submitted to me for creation which i will then release on the asset store free of charge (or another download hosting site).
Please no overly-complex model requests such as detailed characters, etc. and more things like chandeliers, fences, swords, books, magic staffs, houses, treasure (please have concept art for more abstract and unique ideas).
I wana have fun! give me some cool ideas, extra points if it has to do with magic or fantasy.
A quick low quality example (with no occlusion, normals, etc.) i made can be found in the attachments below.
I use Autodesk Maya to do modeling,CrazyBump(check it out!) to make texture maps, and Photoshop to create or edit textures.
Cheers!
a collection of medieval/fantasy ornate doorknockers, handles etc? Some of them are really nifty (thinking dragons with long tails, lions holding the rings, etc. inspiration from metalwork existing on lots of websites
Steampunk style medieval doors with complex bars/locks/peepholes requiring a bit of animation (google steampunk doors)
Assortment of different gargoyles. Maybe with animation of water running out their mouths
Enormous stained glass windows like at the head of massive stairs in ancestral homes, behind thrones etc that can be lit from behind to have coloured light streaming in.
Smaller ones for churches etc
I don’t actually need these ATM, but I think they’d be pretty cool, unusual assets that don’t seem to be abundant in the market & they don’t need to be overly complex to be effective.
I like the idea of the medieval/steampunk doors, as-well as the stained glass windows idea (gonna look great with emitters). currently i’m working on a sacrificial alter (only need to create uv’s and textures now) so when i’m done ill post a picture of it then ill move on.
*i don’t think i will do any animations just yet because i like to focus on mostly static objects
EDIT: emitters get me exited to make cool magic looking daggers
alright so i’m almost done my sacrificial alter and i’m happy to say that i’m finally using emission maps (using it for runic letters, and when i figure out how to make the emissions pulsate like magic it will be golden). Anyways here is what i have so far, at this point i might move on to a next idea.
Here’s a next idea, you could create some generic objects since they are always in high demand. Stuff like buildings, trashbins, streetlights, cars, trees etc.
A selection of billboards, signs, graffiti, shop sale signs, ads/logos etc for vehicles. I.e. Some sort of collection of new & used/worn decals to bring scenes to life so they aren’t just pristine cities ?
yes i used the idea of garbage bins to make a quick swap-able garbage and recycling bins. Here is the Insperation:
And here is the results:
I used no albedo maps leaving the colour to be decided by the dev. All the detail is provided from a normal map which extracted detail off a plastic texture. All logos are made using emission maps and setting GI to none.
The right trash-bin is a optional “grunge” style bin made using a seamless rock texture (previously used for my altar stone) to be used as a secondary detail texture (may be removed on preference).
There is not much fantasy and magic about trash bins but i made them , However keep sending in cool ideas (especially if you find a cool concept drawing) and i will be waiting for more!
i really like the idea of making graffiti decals to use so i may make a pack of like 4-5, i also may make a pack of street signs since they are easy.
*keep the ideas coming please<3 (maybe some magic? lol)
it is a attached to a plane which is then overlayed on a wall by the dev. I’ll probably make a couple of more of these before moving on (normal maps may have a good effect).
*i will upload all of these models for free after i stop being lazy and get a publisher account >.> (not that i havn’t tried)
A collection of magic books/grimoires that can be placed on bookshelves, left on tables, in chests, some open ones (may need to animate an open & closed state though) with ornate carved wooden covers, tooled leather covers, silver or rune inlayed.
A magic wand shop - collections of different ornate wands, wand display stands & cabinets.
Magicians staffs - carved, rune inscribed, claws holding crystals, dragons wrapped around gemstones etc. let your imagination run wild. Any magic inlay could have different colour maps so people can use the staff & set the colour to match whatever magic effect they want the staff to have.
Looks good. Don’t forget the stock standard butt ugly black/blue tag as well. People could then use them as gang tags for territory within their world.
Not sure about publisher accounts but I’d think it would be easier to get on the store if you have a number of collections going up at the same time.
I’ll move on to something new now and @tedthebug i think ill make a set of magic books, and a bookshelf before i move to making a magic alter (mabye, but it would be cool to have cool symbols being driven by emission maps).
Don’t forget to graffiti yourself into the pack (gamer tag, nickname, business name in the asset store etc). Free advertising in return for the free packs
Yes that’s a good idea, and it would be quite funny if one day i saw an indie game with my name on the walls :P.
Well anyways i was pretty much done the spell tome so i might aswell post it up now (feel free to critic any of my stuff).
Here it is:
I have to say it came out pretty good and all texture maps are bang on. I may release 1 or 2 spell tomes for free and then make a commercial pack of around 8 books for 1-2$.
That sounds a plan. Don’t forget to offer up some worn, dog-earred ones as well. Heavily used items will show wear & tear if in someone’s house, lab, library. Items for a shop will look new (unless it is a 2nd hand shop). Some of the bigger grimoires may have metal latches as well (just an idea)
I think im done with the spell tome mini-pack, i quickly made a second book and also included a detail map to add to the book for an optional worn look. Well anyways here it is:
Well as a next project i may do more things that are more high in demand, maybe like a simple cardboard box pack (however i really do like arcane/alchemy stuff ).
