Any space package in the making?

I’ve been away for quite a while; and I missed this place  But now got the bug of Unity again, and would like to get some ideas in playable form.

I was browsing the shop and saw the 2 best assets for space games, which are the space graphic toolking and planetary terrain.
Now, from what I can tell; they are great but there is still some work to do on both of them, before they can be used to make a game like the ones that are popping out all over, based on procedural planets and system.

Is anyone working for a sort of project framework, that makes you start with a working flight model and asset creation, so you skip the boring part of actually create the galaxy, planets and flight model?
While browsing these 2 packages, I noticed that it is not that intuitive to create assets in a random way; but they require you to create map by map, system by system, which is quite time consuming. Also the planetary landing is something that is offered by Planetary terrain package, although it is a good starting point, it doesn’t look similar to games like Evochron or no man sky; which is what I had in mind.

I can write my own; that’s a given, but it would take quite a while; and I am more into doing the actual mechanics of the game and gameplay, instead than set up the actual environment. So I thought that I would ask around, in case that you guys are aware of a package that is on the store (or that may be sold on the store ), that allow to basically have a starting point for any space game.

After all, any game in space needs mostly the same basic things; then it is the graphic style and the features that makes a difference between a good and fun game, and a boring one. Such asset would sell well on the store, I believe, considering the craze that is out there nowadays, with space games.

So it seems that nobody has any plans for this; which means that I have to do it myself.

I will post my results; I am not a 3d artist so my asset will not be that great; but I am pretty good at coding; it is my daily job after all.

I won’t be competing with the other 2 packages already on the store; I am not planning to make a modular package with a lot of customization; I am more into making something that does specific actions and allow a certain degree of customization, like changing assets and parameters; but mostly it will do these things:

  • ship navigation (newtonian probably with assist that can be turned on or off), different for planets with atmosphere and space.
  • Planetary landing, parametrically created probably; There is already the planetary terrain kit that does that, so no need to spend time doing what that package does.
  • hooks for items and tools, so you can create the tools and simply connect the game object to the ship and be done. I am planning few types of items and tools, like weapons, shields, mining tools and scanners.

That should be enough to be as generic as possible; starting with such projects gives enough to start a space game, without being tied to a specific genre or style. I like the approach that the uFS or Adventure Creator package did; so I am aiming at make something similar.

This is mainly for my needs; but if there is enough interest, I could just put int on the store. I work full time so anything Unity related is for fun; I wish I had time to do just Unity work, but ain’t gonna happen (unless I make more money than with my daily job).

There are no responses, because you most likely want to do this.

Hmmm, I have no time really to watch a video, especially after the first 10 seconds were a cacophony of incoherent words.
if you can elaborate further what I want to do, please go ahead.

Many people using Unity has no clue of what programming means; and having generic assets that allow them to focus on the gameplay and art style, more than the technicalities. IMO, an asset like the one that I described, would be useful to them. Whoever know how to develop a game, even if has a clear idea about how to do things; may not have time or will to do it…and still get a benefit out of it.

Following your reasoning, every person should write their own 3d engine? Their own programming language? Maybe build their own hardware too ?

I don’t get where the problem lies. The flight sim framework and the fps framework are pretty popular on the asset store, which prove my point that these kind of assets are in fact useful.
