I’m looking into creating an environment, and I have the student version of 3dsmax. Are there any good tutorials to create say, a castle, or some kind of game environment that can be imported into Unity (the importing is not important at the moment, I just am hopeless at 3d modelling and need some tutorials).
It would be easier to check your local google search or youtube for exactly what your looking for. There are plenty of tutorials out there, I would do a little searching before you ask others to search for you.
Yeah, I did. I spent about 3 hours last night and several this morning looking for tutorials and couldn’t find any specifically related to environment development. I found heaps of broken links with titles that sounded good (such as “intro to environment modelling for unity with 3ds Max part 1”), but the links didn’t work. I have also found several pay sites with good tutorials that I am considering.
I wasn’t asking anyone to do any searching. I asked if anyone knew of any.
In case anyone was looking, I found some really good tutorials at i3dtutorials.com
Next-Gen Game Development with Unity Vol I II
Volume I is all about importing and assigning materials, textures, lighting etc
Volume II is asset creation in Zbrush 3dsmax (or Maya or Softimage - they have three different tutorial packs).
These are paid tutorials, but they are really well done. I registered for a month at unityworkshop.com which happens to include those two tutorials for $19 (but only have access to them for the month) as well as many others.
it’s pretty straightforward to develop environments with max - unity will load the .max files natively (which is pretty slick) or you can export individual elements into fbx format or other formats as desired.
personally i’ve been outputting things into fbx format, since I tend to have other elements in my max files that i don’t want to use in the scene, but you could theoretically model entire levels in max and load them as is if you wanted.
