are there any Wii users around who bought and played with the console?
I’ve read a few reviews and it seems that not all is wonderful. There were issues from ugly graphics to technical problems with the controller, false signals,…
-yes, the graphics cannot be considered next gen. - though they are fine if you’re not an eye candy junky. (they’re not a step back at least)
-the controller is fantastic, surprisingly accurate (with bowling tennis for instance, you can do a subtle hook just like in real life). its nice that you can be lazy just flick the controller to move the way you want, or do full tennis swings like in real life. i would never play an fps with it though it would drive me crazy.
-all around, its just very FUN. a total party system.
one dissapointment - boxing. no real to life control (i.e. uppercut motion does not equal uppercut). i think this is game development issue more than a hardware issue - they just didn’t spend enough time on it. i’m eagerly awaiting a full fledged boxing sim in the future.
Without component cables, it’s fugly at best on an HD set, but it is fun to play. I’ll be definitely picking one up in Jan/Feb 07 along with my PS3 (spring/summer 07 for that)
You gotta remember tho, no dev has utilized the wii to it’s potential yet, not even the tuted Zelda. Trust me, if the GC could output RE4, imagine what the Wii will do.
I get really tired of reading on the game forums about how the console graphics stink and so on, but about 95% of the peeps forget it’s the artists and timeframes behind the scene that’s mostly to blame. Peeps forget we actually have humans involved in the development of what we see/play.
I have no complaints about the console itself. I like the controller and I think it opens up so many opportunities for new games. I played Wii Sports with my family over thanksgiving, and my 80 year old grandpa got totally into all the games. It was really amazing to see people of all ages enjoying it so much.
As far as zelda goes, the first few hours we just OK not great. But it’s getting better as it goes, and it hasn’t been bad enough to make me stop.
I disagree with the complaints about boxing though, I have a blast with that game. I’m up to about 1120 points now. It’s all about the hook punches.
yeah, most of the early guys you can pound with nearly all hooks (at least as far as i went - maybe 4 or 5 opponents). its just not accurate if you’ve ever done any real world boxing or martial arts - both in placement of specific types of strikes in the speed. i was throwing three punches for every one that registered and doing correct hooks / uppercuts that would not show up. i had to stop because it was frustrating me as much as it was fun - i didn’t want to ‘unlearn’ how to punch to play the game better. i’m sure some developer will make a real world accurate one eventually.
Several family get togethers have been uproarious and people of ALL ages are playing and digging it a lot. Our parents seem interested in actually OWNING one for themselves and they have never touched console games in the past.
That’s why all this talk about graphics is just rubish. Nintendo made the right move. How many people over 40 and 50 are going to be remotely interested in PS3 or XBox 360? Kids growing up on the Wii are going to look at the PS3 and XBox 360 controllers and sort of… giggle. “You mean you just sit there like a bump on a log? Whatever.”
I DO wish there were more games that really embrace the new control from the outset and cater to that general audience like Wii Sports does. They can’t come fast enough.
Zelda is bliss. I’d say it’s rare to find anyone who has enjoyed the previous Zelda games that wouldn’t think this is probably the best of the bunch of 'em. I get the HD thing. After seeing something like Gears of War it makes one hesitate at the sight of last-gen graphics.
However, if you are snooty about HD visuals already, I’m so sorry, because there are maybe about 2 or 3 halfway decent console games and none of them have come close to matching the straight up fun I’ve had with something as simple as Wii Sports with a couple of people.
Another note. I find most people go through a period of disillusion with the Wii. At first it seems magic, then you feel some limitations and maybe even think it’s a gimmick. Eventually, though, I found it to be incredibly gratifying and something I wish had more support. The games that REALLY embrace what is happening in Wii Sports are going to be the stand outs for me. Furthermore, XBox 360 and PS3 are forever tarnished for me because I’ll be disappointed in the last-gen controls.
I will try one out when i have time to. I’m curious to see how it feels like. Somehow i still feel that i’m interested in a rev2 of the ps3 but let’s just wait and see. Thanks for the impressions.
Just came out in Portugal yesterday, and my arms are a little sore too! But that’s probably from not doing much exercise…
Although I miss the quality of the graphics of gears of war, (saw it using a projector on a huge wall, looks GREAT!) it is very fun to play. I do sense some “problems” with the controller, mainly sensitivity issues (using the putter on wii sports’ golf can be quite annoying).
But it’s fun, specially if you are playing with others (although 2 guys take the whole room, can’t imagine it with 4) and they’re all jumping around!
Ah, there’s another complaint, I can’t use the new controllers to play games from the Game Cube. But I’ll probably buy one… either that one or xbox 360.
Lallander! Stop and smell the frickin’ flowers! Zelda in 30 hours? You must have rushed past everything following only the main thread… which of the two time readings are you using on your game file? Was it your second time or something?
Just finding it hard to believe. Still, I do like to savor it myself.
Okay…i just came back from a shop where i was able to play an hour with the Wii.
My impressions are:
The graphics are really well hmm okay they are working. For cute/comic stuff this works out although i think that the look they have choosen doesn’t really look cute or comic like. It looked a bit unmotivated to me. I would have choosen a slightly different art direction. It’s not bad but it’s also just not good.
I’ve played through the Wii sports titles and it was fun to play - some more some less - and without a doubt it seemed to attract people who didn’t look like they would have something in common with video games a lot. So a big plus for nintendo on this side.
I found the quality of the Wii and the controllers very good designed and manufatured. At least in the sport games i found the loudspeaker and the rumble pretty useless.
What i disliked was the games difficulty. Everything was way too easy. It felt like some party games were half drunken people want to have some fun and i missed a little bit an higher accuracy making it’s way into the gamedesign. I hope that the controller is able to support this. This would be important if you want to play games on a longer run with the Wii. You know, games where you feel more in charge.
Anyway a fun experience with a nice crowd of people and a boy next to me screaming “this is unfair” all the time i beat him in tennis (by the way the zooming textures in the background looked horrible). But it’s not a must have in my opinion at the moment.

I’m actually playing through “Zelda: A Link to the Past” right now on my Mac and I have to say,“screw graphics.” This game is so fun to play that I couldn’t care less about the graphics. And this brings up another point floating around right now… In 10 years which game is going to be more “timeless”, “Wind Waker” or “Twilight”? I think games that stylize the graphic possibilities of the current tech fair much better in the long run than games that try and push technology to it’s “photo-realistic” extreme. “Zelda: Ocarina” already looks painful to play 10 years later, but “Link to the Past” doesn’t (almost 15 years). It seems to me like an alarm bell sounding in the ears of all these studios trying to push the uncanny valley over the next precipice… just calm down, step back, and look at what you’re trying to achieve. “Gears of War” is going to look gross and awkward in 5 years time. And that just spells out a push towards tech over artistic vision.
Well, i wasn’t arguing after a certain style. Certainly a good style beats a feature rich presentation everytime but what i’ve seen on screenshots and read on forums is a) not a great graphics sytle in my opinion no matter what technology is behind and b) there seem to be problems that under certain conditions the signal output is kind of dark. The later one is what i was asking for.
Taumel. The difficulty level in the tennis and boxing, for instance, ramps up according to your skill level. (Which improves with each successful game.)
The rumble and the speaker sound in Tennis, for instance, makes the game instantly accessible and it’s completely essential because you FEEL when you hit the ball. Without it it would be hard to gauge how well you are swinging. The feature is also used to let people know it’s their turn and it will be used to give one player secret information or let them know their “it” in tag type games and it is generally a subtle and subliminal way to submerse players in the game.
