I THINK I MIGHT DO IT. Anyone here have experience with this? You basically make a game within 48 hours and it is entered into a competition and you can win prizes and cash and stuff. Also big names in the industry will see your game.
I love how they misspelled Croshaw’s name in the huge image on the front page. (They got it right on the detail page.)
Wow, that’s a nice list of judges. Hm, I never got around to trying Papa Yo. I should.
I actually tried a Ludum Dare a couple times back, but couldn’t get the game finished. I think I’ve advanced since then, but I’m not really to the point that I’m confident enough to join up with an artist and go for it.
Isn’t it kind of messed up that, theoretically, a Valve Corp. Senior Developer can compete against a 15 year old high school student ? Imagine what professionals can put out in 48 hours versus someone like us.
Competitions are never really fair unless the people competing are exactly as capable as each other, ie identical to each other, in which case they would both produce exactly the same game output and there’d be a tie between every entrant… . so, it really comes with the territory. If you want to be in a competition you have to accept the fact that there is something unfair about it, there always is, and the persons who win usually aren’t the ones who most deserve it. But it can be fun.
Hmmm it could be useful to go to the lumdum dare webpage ludumdare.com/compo data is offline | Ludum Dare and look at the each competitions(they do three a year i think) winners plus the runners up and see the quality of what to expect with this one and see if you can do the same in 48 hours.
I might try it. I’ve had a dead simple idea for a long time that I really wanna try out…and given that my work with Thora is still somewhat at a crawl (I have a big move looming, so I’m mostly packing stuff), this idea is so stupid that it’s golden.
You’ll see. And probably agree with that last part there, too.
I wonder how much we can bring in to this , like If I have game draw, use the procedural generation tool to create a city, is that cheating . If i use FBX motion files from a library , is that cheating . Heck if I have tons of my own custom code, and i compile it into a DLL does that count as a library
So… Its a game jam where the stuck “indie” in the name. Which is awesome because EA constantly sweeps all the other game jams. Overall it just seems like lazy game jam as it is all online.
Its like the hundreds of “indie” promotional/sites/blogs/reviews that have been spring up everywhere. When anything starts to trend a bit, all the folks with no real skill at anything but can manage a wp blog crawl out and jump on the bandwagon. It is almost guaranteed that the core people involved have nothing to with games at all. Web developers and self promoters probably. Basically it is a showcase/destination site, and will in short time be full of ads.
Sorry to sound cynical, this always happens when something gains a bit of popularity. I’ll bet the number of web sites that promote/write about “indie games” increased 10 fold with the indie game movie came out. The “get-rich/popular-quick” folks start swarming around.
Yeah I always like the idea of 48 hour jam but then I think what am I going to do for art. I think it would more interesting if they gave us some starter art
I’m not paying… they should have looked for sponsors for the prize money, Actually I would but no way with Ben Crowshaw as a judge there should only be devs not some none talented sour douche…
No need to be so sour
It’s another cool platform for anyone interested to shine. The 25$ is open for discussion, sure. But oh well, once in a lifetime one could go for it and you get to be judged by some interesting industry people. So it’s a neat little exposure possibility, as well.
Great we are not forced to participate and can see tons of awesome games to possibly come out of this. Yay - indie spirit for the win
It pays to do a little research before posting comments like this. Ben Croshaw has developed numerous games, including the Chzo series - for which he won numerous awards.
