Anyone excited about console development?

Nintendo has signed a licensing agreement with Unity so unity games can be going to the Nintendo platform, Sony also signed a licensing agreement which will bring Unity games to PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and other PS mobile devices. This gives indie developers more of a chance to get there amazing works of art out to more platforms then just PC, MAC, Linux, Android, WebPlayer, and iOS.

Nintendo has had a licensing agreement since the Wii, IIRC. It still required a developer’s license though.

Oh okay thanks for correcting me on that then.

At least with the ouya you can develop for a console.

that depends upon the price of console license. I do not see a point of investing 10-30K for just one platform and thats just unity license cost. Do not tell me cost of dev kit and other hassles. I am the only one right now on my team working on,some have 2 or 3 or 4? How could we manage such titanic cost for just one platform? It is not something without we will die. It is just an enhancement. In past, game market was heavily dominated by ms and sony. With the advent of steam, xna, ouya, upcoming steambox, googleplay, things are going to change. Obviously the new sony’s machine is just wonderful(I would like to play around those x86 registers and 8GB DDR5!! oao!). But it is their machine, they have to let us in. We are not bound by them,in some sense they are. So if they make an affordable way for indie, indie will answer. Otherwise, things might be same as wii. Thats my opinion on console.

I will most certainly develop for the OUYA as it runs android I believe, and kaiyum has a point it will be expensive for a license for Nintendo and PS3 roughly around the price point of 10-30K for just one of the two platforms. I’m just going to stick with PC, web player, and Android for now.

This, if a console company doesn’t want to be indie friendly they can go take a hike.
I predict any console that does not become indie friendly will suffer huge financial loss and lose huge market share.

+1 Steamifacation will educate consoles to play nice or be crushed under the weight of their own bloated licensing fees.

+1000.
