Hi there!

Check out these:

3DCoat (a tad cheaper than zbruzh I think) http://www.3dcoat.com

Sculptris (the most awesome program since Zbruzh  And it`s free ) http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=90617

Silo ( cheap good 3d-sculpting + modelling ) http://nevercenter.com

Edit: Waaaaaay to slow to hit the reply button

Roald

Sculpting with some optimizations for relatively high poly counts, normal map generation and export, lightmapping, and even some texture painting.
Free.

thanks guys! ill check those out

If you want to go totally free Sculptris + Blender + xNormal is a good way to go. Sculptris gives you nice sculpting, then blender for retopo, unwrapping, texturing, then xNormal to bake across your normal maps.

well i use Maya

ZBrush is insanely cheap compared to Maya.

3ds max is free if your a student but just hit the student check box `and as if by magic you will get it…for free

Yup, and it would be illegal to use it for anything you sell. The license on the student edition is pretty restrictive.

Oh my god, a 13 year old that can pirate stuff!

No, but seriously, given the fact that you are on a Software Development forum, I’m sure you can understand the difficulties and barriers that must be faced when developing even the simplest game, using a middleware engine no less. Now, how could you possibly, in good moral conscience, STEAL from fellow software developers, who have put literally THOUSANDS of hours behind their software? I’m sure you’d be absolutely pissed off if someone were to steal your game, right?

Seriously, even if you do pirate maya, zbrush, 3ds max, etc., you couldn’t possibly hope to sell or publish your game legally. You’d get your ass sued. When there are perfectly capable solutions provided to you at zero cost and with no licensing restrictions, why do that? Why waste hours of your time learning how to use a tool if you can’t even benefit from the fruits of your labor?

In the end, you’re only hurting yourself.

It’s your choice, however, I’m nothing but a single person on the internet trying to convince a massive group of ignorant thieves with an ill-placed sense of entitlement.

This is encouraging piracy which I believe is a violation of the Unity Forum rules.

zBrush in the long run is the cheapest paid solution as I understand it. From what I gather on this page here, its free upgrades forever after you purchase it: ZBrush - The World's Leading Digital Sculpting Solution

At least they are allowing users of any previous version to upgrade to 4.0 for free it seems. So I assume they do this regularly.

EDIT: This is confirmed, this is their current policy is allowing older versions to be upgraded for free. HOWEVER, they do not guarantee this to always be the case.

Ryan - you pirate others software, but want to protect your own?

what I know maya, also has capabilities to sculpt/paint or whatever thats called there.
Maya Online Help - Sculpt Geometry Tool

But an other thing is, you are using Maya and are asking for something cheaper then zBrush? Makes no sense to me, sorry.

He probably pirated Maya…

This is incorrect, you cannot sculpt in Maya in the same fashion as in ZBrush, the Maya “sculpting” tool is used for deforming objects with an interactive brush that can use map files to determine the brush profile, but it cannot add geometry, create advanced edits, etc. as in ZBrush.

As for ZBrush, it is a very inexpensive professional development tool, especially for the amazing work that can be created with it. Serious developers should make an effort to add ZBrush to their pipeline. Just out of curiosity, what do some people on this forum think would be an “affordable” price for ZBrush?

Considering the “free upgrades for life” policy that they’ve been sticking to, the current pricing is a bargain.

well, I’m sorry… but I don’t use maya, so thanks for clearing that up for us i3DTutorials.

Whats the price of zbrush? I know mudbox is the same its from autodesk but im not sure if you can get that free student license with it the way you can with 3ds max.
