I know surveys are not the most exciting thing, but I promise this one is different and straightforward, with no personal questions involved.
We’ve created a survey to better understand the various challenges in game development, ranging from engineering and design to project management and accessibility. While these challenges aren’t exactly hidden, they need to be clearly understood before we can begin addressing them effectively.
In exchange for your time and valuable insights, we plan to share the results back with the community. This includes potential solutions to the most frequently reported challenges, ensuring that this effort benefits everyone, not just our team.
If you can spare a bit of your time, your participation would be incredibly valuable;
Also, feel free to ask questions or comment on the survey itself here. I’m more than happy to provide answers and engage in any discussions.
Please note that we had to enforce sign-in on this form to prevent automated spams but enforcing it does not mean we can see or collect your e-mail address. That’s only possible if you choose to provide your e-mail explicitly by typing it in the designated section.
Who are you? Why are you doing the survey? What is it going to be used for?
These arent really explained on the survey and seeing as I cant find any info on who “bardside” are, ill pass until I have said information.
"We’ve created a survey to better understand the various challenges in game development, ranging from engineering and design to project management and accessibility. "
Right, but why? Why do you want to know that? I assume this will help your business in some way, explain why and how that is.
Wow! If I had a nickel for every time I saw a questionable survey here in recent memory, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Right?
You’re absolutely right. Allow me to add more context.
I’m a multi-disciplined IT professional, mainly working in the fintech sector, but also a gaming enthusiast who often gets involved in game development. Recently, I’ve had the privilege of working with a small indie game development team, sharing my knowledge and experience. This collaboration has highlighted similar challenges seen in SMEs and big corporations. It appears that many tools and practices common in the broader IT world are missing—or hard to find—in game development, especially for smaller teams or enthusiasts.
Our goal is to first validate these observations and then explore if our collective experiences can provide pragmatic solutions, such as practical guides on starting projects, best practices, and other crucial factors. This isn’t about simply curating community efforts into a list but offering concrete, actionable advice, combined with tooling you may require.
If this initiative proves feasible, we might consider giving it a go.
You’re also right in thinking this survey underpins a business idea. However, the promises I’ve made, like sharing the results and potential solutions, aren’t part of any product we might develop. They’re commitments to the community. Your feedback will help us evaluate the idea, and in return, sharing our findings and experiences with the community’s reported struggles is the least we could do.
As for Bardside, it’s the name we’ve chosen for this initiative and also the name of the indie team I’m working with. It’s just our way of branding our efforts in this space.
Please let me know if this answers to your questions. I’d be happy to give another go if am missing anything.
I see where you’re coming from, especially with the recent survey that seemed quite intrusive. It’s important to differentiate, though. Our survey steers clear of personal questions like workplace details. Instead, we focus on broader challenges in game development, aiming to gather insights that can benefit the community as a whole.
I’m curious, what aspects of our survey did you find questionable? I’d genuinely like to address any concerns you have. We’ve put a lot of effort into crafting this survey to ensure it’s respectful and valuable to participants, so your feedback would be really valuable to correct any mistakes we may have made.
Thanks but generally surveys like this which are for your financial gain (market research however you chalk it up) are usually incentivised in some way other than “you will get a copy of the data”.
To be fair, if they were to announce a planned product or a company first, then only people somewhat interested in that field would fill out the poll, drastically skewing the results…
One can make a guess or two from doing the poll though.
No “intrusive” questions this time.
I got occasionally similar messages on various contacts. And when asked for specifics topics, person say, “yes we do that”. Then when it comes to details as person is questioned, then silence.
No offence, but you know how your message sounds to us?
“I am a driver of certain type of vehicles. I am driving for some extended time, delivering product to my related customers. Trust me, I know things”
You don’t need to announce a planned product or a company. There is a very wide spectrum between everything and nothing. For the record stating the name of the initiative is basically nothing as it’s just a way of labeling the survey for purposes of distributing the data.
You mean aside from promising that our data won’t be sold or shared but unwilling to state who you are affiliated with? Everything was likely made in good faith but it doesn’t feel that way from the outside. It feels questionable.
Yea, generic marketing based surveys… not really what this forum is for. There are plenty of ways to research and find out the tools that are used and the solutions available. Crowdsourcing your research without compensation… not cool.
