Just reading between the lines regarding what Steve Jobs recently replied to a critic’s email, I believe, (especially now that Apple Computer’s profitability tops the charts), that Apple intends to not only dominate the internet with dispensation of content, but to redefine and reshape the “public” internet into a content centric, corporately sponsored portal for everything.
They won’t do this by force but by seducing the public with a very appealing digital, connective platform.
Nice hardware, nice software - the “one-stop-shop”.
Challenging Flash, face to face, and Google, (with it’s Android platform), Jobs has indicated they have their own plans for computers, pda’s, phones and content dispensation portals.
I think that it could be cool if something like that actually happens, all the noobish and simple or empty head folks would go with the new internet because it´s new, that way we would keep our internet for ourselves. Sounds good for me.
Its interesting that jobs thinks that such a business and world model can work out given the painfull time parents have with their children when they reach their teenager times and realize that there is a world outside their “limited rights” which apple is trying to enforce with their “soon communism class” censorship “for the good of the users”.
They should focus on the technical and security aspect and leave the content alone. They added the parental control for something
Yeah, i realize that in fact what they want to do is a AOL 2, i guess i was just daydreaming that the internet could be again as once it was in the old days, maybe it´s just nostalgia.
Didn’t a lot of people already move on to the new internet with Internet Explorer 8?
I’ve tried it and the new internet is nothing like the old. It’s pretty nifty actually. At first I feared I would lose things like facebook which were tied to my old internet, but it seems they are compatible with the new internet as well.
Sorry, as a web designer I just find Microsoft’s ads amusing.
lol that’s a funny ad. M$ should really stop wasting money on developing internet Explorer. It’s one of the slowest out there, has a wonky interface(at least for me) and has always had trouble displaying web pages. Anyone who has done any web development knows that Internet Explorer is the hardest to debug and test web pages for. A page can run and look fine in firefox or chrome, or Opera etc, but Internet explorer could have links colored wrong tables out of wack etc. Death to Internet Explorer.
As for Apple “creating the next internet”, the internet is here and will always be in this form. There is no next internet, just how you access it. If you get it only through a connection to the app store, you still are connecting to the internet we have always had. Apple needs to get off their corporate power trip reserving rights to do things to software on their platform others develop for it etc. And users need to stop buying into their crap. They want to sensor whatever they can so users don’t have to worry about it. It’s the whole Apple philosophy, make the experience as simple as possible, even when that requires you to take away someones basics decision making skills.
If I remember correctly they cleared all wifi finding apps from their store for the Touch/iPhone. They did this on the grounds that they could be used to potentially find unsecure networks to which a user could CHOOSE to connect to, which is unlawful. So, instead use the built in one from apple, sure you might have to get closer to the signal, but hey it still detects those networks right? But that’s ok, its Apple approved.
Same with the clearing of sexual images which banned apps that sold swimsuits. But of course the Sports Illustrated and Playboy apps stayed, cause Apple says they are well known in the industry.
Also, no flash? Why? The users of the device can choose to use flash or not. Why must Apple decide to block it eliminating my choice?
My point is that Apple is far to controlling, and I hope they never manage ‘the internet’. If they do, I’m sure ‘1984’ will surely come to existence.
