Applying Mecanim to an Asset Store character

Why do my animations play fine individually (Mechanim/Animations), but not after being placed in the Scene after creating a State Machine? All I get is a static first frame. I get the same result whether “Loop Pose” is checked or unchecked. Same result with Baking Pose. ??

For what it’s worth, I’m trying to “Mecanimize” this guy.

My bad. I think I forgot to add the Animation Controller to the Object.
