Hi, I am not sure how to reduce the ios app size. The android app size is around 60mb, quite fine. But ios app is over 200mb. I am not sure if there are some approaches to make the app size smaller.
In the editor log, I got like this:
Textures 80.8 mb 70.5%
Meshes 912.1 kb 0.8%
Animations 6.5 mb 5.6%
Sounds 5.0 mb 4.3%
Shaders 519.2 kb 0.4%
Other Assets 9.9 mb 8.6%
Levels 893.9 kb 0.8%
Scripts 3.5 mb 3.0%
Included DLLs 6.3 mb 5.5%
File headers 512.1 kb 0.4%
Complete size 114.6 mb 100.0%
At here, it shows me the total size is 114.6mb. I am not sure how this value is related to the final install size shown in the apple store ( > 200mb). I heard that the install size is actually the decompressed. But in this case, will compression take any effect to reduce the install size of the app?
You’re going to need to reduce the size of your textures, limit the use of “True Color” textures (ie opt for compression where acceptable).
Seeing that Textures are 70.5% of your total, that’s where you’re going to get some success, there isn’t really any other savings to be had.
Another standout is “Other Assets”, can you determine what makes up this 9.9mb? I recently added a splash screen to one of our products and foolishly added a 2048x2048 image for the spashscreen + some splash logos at similar sizes. This included a whopping 12MB to our build (were listed as something like “other assets”). I reduced the background splash image to 256x256 and due to the Gaussian blur that’s added the reduction from 2048 to 256 was indistinguishable. Likewise, I reduced the logos to 512x512 and the result was (from memory) 12MB down to 1.3mb (significant saving!!)
By “reduce the size of your textures”, I’m mean change the import settings for them setting an acceptable “Max Size” and appropriate “Compression”.
You get very little saving from the compression applied to a unity IPA since most assets are included inside the signed bundle and due to the encryption applied the IPA compression is almost useless at reducing the final size.
Look at your export log (Editor Log) and see which textures are costing the most and work through that list until you reduce it as much as you need. The Editor log has a nice list of assets and their sizes from the last build.
Likewise your audio at 5mb, perhaps force them to mono, reduce the bitrate, sample frequency etc.
It’s a hard task reducing to be below the 100mb limit, so I bid you good luck…
