ARDrone Sim: Zombies - an OUYA, iOS Android shooter

I received my OUYA a few weeks ago and wanted to get a game out for the OUYA release on the 25th June. I was trying to think of simple ideas I could put together in about a month when I woke up one night with an idea.

ZOMBIES!

I’d take my existing quadcopter simulator, put it in an urban setting and add Zombies. So that’s what I’ve been doing with assets from the asset store.

You have to fly around the city, gunning Zombies down taking care not to shoot civilians. There will be several modes: Timed mode of 2mins, 5mins 10mins an endless mode. The aim is to get the highest score.

Zombies randomly drop ammo crates and you can exchange ammo for health or health for ammo by landing on one of two large metal containers in the city.

Here’s a video from the OUYA version, shot it from the TV so the quality is a bit poor.

Would love to hear your feedback if you’re a GUI/HUD designer who’d fancy doing some work on the GUI please get in touch.

Nice concept, after watching the gameplay im interested in what you’ll add to the game.

Thanks. I think it needs more purpose at the moment, although flying around gunning zombies down is fun…

Any more feedback?

This game is VERY interesting. I really like the concept.

Looks very cool. If I had an Ouya I’d buy it.

Here’s some footage from the iOS version…

I think it is looking really good. One thing I noticed and I cant say its bad since I am not playing in on the ipad mini, but the GUI items on the screen take up a lot of real estate. So the actual game play viewing seems congested, but hey this is just friendly feedback and my personal opinion

keep up the great work!

Thanks. Yeah I’m still playing with the HUD elements and trying to find something I’m 100% happy with. I’ve since changed those joysticks and made them semi transparent so they’re not so intrusive.

Could do with more feedback please guys, good or bad.

First off, a disclaimer. I don’t think good feedback helps as much as constructive negative feedback, providing the feedback helps. With that said:

Zombies - pointless. There’s no fear factor as you’re in a radio controlled drone thing. You don’t care if you lose it. Totally pointless. The stupidity of the game intensely annoys me. I see you shooting innocents. I see the screen fading red as if player is an organic lifeform. The graphics are passable, but not interesting. It could be a lot more than this with tweaks.

Now for some constructive:

If you insist on going for zombies then add a point to it and emotional impact/fear, such as escort based missions. It’d be like the last of us, but you escort people to locations safely, so there’s still that fear factor if a woman and child won’t make it or not… scouting ahead to remove danger then nipping back to save them just in time. Risk reward sort of thing.

Have it use extra abilities such as lock picking, or hotwiring, things that open up a route for the humans you escort. Currently, it’s just a tiresome demo when it could be much more with an average amount of work added.

Thanks for your honest feedback Hippo, I think you’re missing the point of the game though. It’s just a casual, kill 5 minutes at the bus stop kind of game. It’s also designed, like my first ARDrone Sim to help people practice flying the real thing.
