Are there a lot of Unity 3.5 users still out there?

Just wanted to know if there are still 3.5 users out there.

I author in 3.5 and build releases in 4.2.

Interesting, moving this to gossip though, carry on, knowing how you use the different versions is handy.

Aurore, the reason people are using 3.5 and 4.2.2 is because all the other versions of Unity are broken.

Yup 4.2.21f has been the most stable version for me…

in general i think the main reason people stick with an older version is because they started a project in that version, and most of the time its not worth the hassle to upgrade in the middle of a project unless theres a new feature you really really need. if you do, you then have to go back and debug all the new issues that arise from changed functionality, and there may be issues you don’t even see right away.

there may be people who stick with an older version because they are familiar with it and don’t want to waste time if the new version has a lot of different features.

This.

Pretty much.

I regret upgrading from 3.5. Unity 4 is so unstable and the new features are too green yet.

One big issue for me is Asset store support. I’m getting a bit tired of littering my code with #If UNITY_3_5 also the rendering engine has been changed slightly with linear lighting support, lighting when using render with shader and other stuff.

And yes banreaxe is very correct.

I always keep my editor up-to-date. I was stuck with 3.5 for two months and I thought I would tear all my hair out because I couldn’t afford to upgrade right away.

Just keep your projects backed-up and update to take advantage of new features, fixes, etc.

Unless I’m mistaken, anyone who happened to buy Pro license(s) during the Unity 3 generation would also have to either re-buy the license or just stick with 3.5, and to most people the 4.x updates probably aren’t worth $750+.

If there’s something that gives you actual advantage, sure. If there’s not then why take any risk at all?

I tend to keep up to date until the design is locked and I start making a final iteration, some of the new features are worth having, some new assets become available in the store that make it worthwhile upgrading.

Some of the Unity installs I use (current project gets to use the latest, finally):
Many of these exist still for Asset Store support.

I tend to upgrade cautiously and keep the latest safe one for my purposes (there are a few main projects which all must work before I say it’s safe). If I produce anything I think is worth putting on the asset store, I’ll keep one older version, but only as old as the minimum that makes sense with whatever I’ve made. For instance sprite-related stuff would be packaged with 4.3.latest, but 3D models would probably be a good idea to package with 3.5.x.

It would be interesting to see some stats on this from UT themselves, but the last poll I remember from early last year had 3.x users at 20%. UT could measure fairly accurately what percentage of users use the asset store. This might be a different number than those who use 3.x in general.

Unity 2.6 FTW!

I have multiple but I only use the latest.

I use many different versions, 3.5 being the oldest one. We’d love to upgrade, but have 3000+ assetbundles to convert first!

If I publish something then It would be on 3.5 I think because I own the pro/mobile licences. But 4.x is so advanced and I have the trail for a few month, I dont think I could get away from it anymore, Tessellation alone is so cool

I’ll upgrade from 3.5 when the GUI revamp will be officially released.
