Is it possible to vary the strength of a 2D area effector’s force depending on the distance the effected object is from a point?
For example, say I have a fan on the edge of an area effector. Is there a way to make the force further from the fan weaker than the force closer to the fan using one area effector? It looks possible with a point effector2D, but not with an area effector2D.
Or will I have to create a series of overlapping area effectors, from small to large, with the bigger the area effector the weaker the force?

The whole point of a PointEffector2D is that you get a force as a function of either constant, inverse-linear distance or inverse-squared distance. That would solve your fan analogy unless you don’t want the force to be along the direction defined by the body/collider and the effector which is odd not to.
You are free to write your own custom effector though and now that’s super easy in 5.6 as you can call GetContacts. Set-up a trigger, call GetContacts on it (the overload that returns Colliders) and you now have a list of colliders you can perform work on i.e. check their distance from some point and scale an AddForce.
