Art Asset Naming Conventions

First off, new to the forums, really looking forward to working in Unity 3d! I’m handling the art assets/models/animations and sound on my team.

Secondly, apologies all round if this question has been roundly asked, but I’ve done a quick search, couldn’t find anything.

The Question Du Jour: Naming Conventions for Art Assets- anything glaring I should know about? Length of name, underscores, uppercase, lowercase, characters, anything that anyone knows of that gives Unity the hiccups? I know Havok is real twitchy about this, as well as some ‘mod’ engines. Any tips you vets can give for naming maps/mats/models would be appreciated.

I’ll post some screens/links as soon as we’ve got stuff to look at, should be early next year. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum!

I haven’t had any problem with any names I’ve tried to use in Unity, aside from characters that the OS doesn’t let you use, or a forward slash, which OS X allows but Unity doesn’t (because that’s part of Unity’s representation of file paths). Go crazy and report back here if you ever find anything weird; there are probably some special characters that could cause problems, but I don’t use them much.

P.S. Although unity.com was taken, and so unity3d.com was chosen as the website, the product is actually not called Unity 3D.
