Ascension: New Updates

Hi all,

First time I have posted. I have been following Unity since 1.6ish and now we are actually taking a stab at making a game with it. We have been in preproduction for a couple of months now and are ready to show some of our concept art work and soon we will be ready to show some in game work. We are making a multi-player online space dog fight game with elements of game play common to FPSs such as capture the flag. The title is called Ascension and you can view the initial website at

www.ascensionwar.com

(keep checking back as we will have more added over the next few weeks)

For now though here are some concept pieces to look over.

Very cool. It would be really interesting to hear more about the team that is making it. Looks like there’s lots of talent and experience there!

Sure I would be glad to talk about all the guys in the trenches with me.

Starting with me and our studio Digital Roar. I am the co-founder of Digital Roar Studios. We started out with several of the guys who are still with us as a bunch of ex-grads from Full Sail who wanted to make a game and see what the indie game world had to offer. Unfortunately most of us did not code. So we tried to bring on programmers with very mixed but overall disappointing results. So thats kinda where my story was in the middle of all this. I started out an traditional art student with interest in comic art (YAY Eastman and Laird). When I started college I was interested in taking this further but after pursuing fine art and then adding in a secondary focus in graphic design, I fell out of love with the small prospects in my native area of actually doing anything with this degree that was interesting to me. So I took some time off, got married and had a moment of enlightenment, thanks to my wife, that making games was my real goal in life. So I went down to a small school in Orlando FL called Full Sail and began to really get into 3D graphics. Well I made some great contacts and even better friends and after graduation a friend of mine from back home had some interesting opportunities fall in his lap so we jumped on them and tried to finagle a indie game development start up out of it. Again not having nailed down programmers but having boat loads of art and in the end the money people not following through as well it all kinda came down to “if you want to do it you have to to it yourself”. So (please programmers don’t take this personally) after getting burnt by some coders I said to “heck” with it and went right back into school and learned programming. Recently I finished my Bachelors in that and began a Masters doing what I feel is my calling of bringing great game play, art and code together. And with the group of artist that were still in the wings we began Ascension. So long story short on me… I’m an artist that codes… kinda like a technical artist. OK, moving on (and not in as much detail)

John Lyons is the other co-founder of the company and is a old buddy from my original stomping grounds. His background is in business and he programs things I have no interest in like cold fusion.

Jon Mariucci: He is a very talented environment artist and more or less a jack of all trades when it comes to computer art.

Allan Norico: He is our primary concept artist and responsible for most of the ship art to date.

Will Crawford: He is one of our character concept artists.

Clarence Burk: Another talented character concept artist.

Dana Brancucci: Another talented ship concept artist.

Jeremy Finch: 3D artist.

Blake Johnson: 3D artist.

Bryce Lumpkin: Character rigger and animator.

Daniel Morrison: 3D artist.

Darryl Russel: 3D artist.

Steven Jinn: 3D artist.

Jordan Hale: Environment Artist.

Nick Wyatt: 3D artist.

Christopher Cain: Audio

There are several others in the wings, but we just are not to the point of needing their abilities yet.

As you can see we are short programmers but this is one of the reasons we chose Unity. However we will have a few joining us as we move deeper into production.

Thanks! That is an impressive team. Digital Roar is a great name too. It will be exciting to follow this project!
BTW, the desktop pictures that are on your website seem to be a rather low resolution (great pics though). Any higher res ones coming?

Thanks again, yes we will have some on the way. This site is more or less a temporary fix until the pro one gets finished, so please check back with us and we should have allot more up soon.

The concepts are fantastic, I love the level map.

Hey
Very Impressive art work! keep`em comming

Is the name an homage to the Descent games?

Thanks guys, in part yes the name does play off of Descent games, only really because some of the controls are reminiscent of Descent and that style of flight. Mainly however the name tips its hat to the background story, which we will be posting once the final site is up and rolling.

Nice work… will be nice to see it as it gets a little further along. Make sure to post some more updates as you progress.

Hey Great work…
Level map looks really cool…
keep us updated… cant wait to play it…

Zinks,

I love the designs and concept! Is there ever really too many mysterious alien races bent on the destruction of the human race? Not while I’m alive!

I feel your pain in locating particular skill sets, only in reverse! Our roster is smaller than yours, however I can locate an endless supply of developers, but graphics artists and animators, well… I’ve got one partner who has done some work for Activision, and a line on another guy who is working for 2K, but… we’re still early on in the process. Not to imply anything with your current project, but would you be interested in any collaborative arrangements?

Hey Galent,

We are always willing to consider the possibilities of collaboration. We really just want to make great games. So if you would like to talk further, email my partner at john.lyons@digital-roar.net and we can work out the details from there. Thanks for the comments and interest.

Look’s like you guys are on your way! Very impressive artwork. With a reliable team and engine (Unity) you are sure to be a hit. I’ve been modeling, texturing, and uv mapping for over two years now with the Sector 13 indie team and have wondered what would be different if we used Unity rather than PC based Ogre. It’s been a lot of work for all of us but it’s worth it the first time you fly an arena and do a little aerial combat. Remember to have lots of fun along the way! - paul

BTW- S13 is a multi-player space shooter game also.)

. . some artwork to see if you like. . . .

Hey Nuski, Thanks. You guys are well ahead of us in terms of game play. Looks like you really nailed the controls and the 3rd person camera down well. Yeah I am one of the old ppl following OGRE as well. I was a big part of the art on one student game that is still in the featured projects on the OGRE site. The project was called Splintered Kingdoms. It was a neat concept but it was a student game and didn’t go much further than that. We are doing our best to keep things fun. I just wish life outside of this project didn’t get in the way so much lol. Thanks again for the comment and S13 look great as well.

Hey Everyone,

We are working hard on getting the full version of the website up atm and there is an issue we would like to get you opinion on. We plan on releasing multiple language versions of the site, and since the Unity community is very diverse, we would like to know what languages do you think would be best to support.

Thanks for your input

Hey everyone, just a quick update as I am exhausted atm. The new ascension site is up (www.ascensionwar.com). There are many new images in the media section and also we have made several videos showcasing the art and music as well. Here are the direct YouTube links:

I hope you all enjoy and we will be updating the Unity community first and foremost on this project.

Thanks

Zach

Wowzer! Really impressing stuff there man :)Those concepts seems to be taken straight outta Industrial Light Magic`s concept treasure chest!
Looking forward to seeing the progress with this one!

Keep it up!

The concepts are top-notch. I’m looking forward to this one.
