Hi ming000.

2D tools to make illustrations, 2D characters or backgrounds:
GIMP (free) Lots of tutorials on Youtube. It’s kinda easy to learn.
Krita (free) used for game illustrations by some game designers. Very fun to use.
Inkscape (free)

Adobe Photoshop (Must pay for)
Adobe illustrator (Must pay for)

And other countless other 2d type programs out there, that can make artwork, or 2d style characters, for animations or game characters.

For making 3D game characters, 3D Enviroments,Vehicles, Props or Worlds from scratch:
BLENDER (free) - Used to make 3D models of Characters, props enviroments, vehicles etc.

Sculptris (free) - A 3D sculpting program. Lots of Fun. Go crazy with you creations. lol! http://pixologic.com/sculptris/
If you don’t like making 3D models the conventional way, you might enjoy “Sculpting” it etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

Or you could try the Paid versions, of sculpting software, like Z Brush or Modo. Your choice.

If you want to make human characters easy, you can try MAKEHUMAN. http://www.makehuman.org/
It is a 3D human character making program.
It’s very easy to use too.
And you can use the characters you make in Makehuman for Game, film or commercial projects too.
But you might still have to learn, some basic 3D modelling in Blender, or other 3D software, to help tweak certain things to your character.

I hope I didn’t overwhelm you.
I was originally a MAYA user too.
But I started using Blender 3 years ago. Because it’s fun to use too.

And when you learn these programs, don’t forget to practice, practice and practice some more.
It’s the only way to get better.

PS: If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask.
ENJOY!!
Bye!

Oh yes, you could check out Art of Illusion or K3D as well.
But I don’t know if they have the formats to export to Unity though.

It will always be hard to start in a new program. There is no getting around it. Character and world art are both in and of themselves disciplines that people spend a career trying to master. It will take time and practice. Everyday. One step at a time.

If you are like most of us, it will take months, maybe even a year before you make something that you can be really be proud of.

Both 3DS max and maya are worth the learning curve. They are a standard in most cases. Google and youtube will be your friend. If you have the opportunity, a class is also worth the investment.

A Cintiq is a great idea.
And you have a screen to.

But believe it or not, I use a GENIUS drawing tablet.
http://www.geniusnet.com/Genius/wSite/lp?ctNode=174&CtUnit=156&BaseDSD=10&mp=1
It’s not too fancy, but it gets the job done for Drawing my 2D creations in GIMP or PHOTOSHOP.
And for my 3D Sculpting in Blender or Sculptris.
Believe it or not, it works super well for me.
It works well with those programs I use too.

Strangely, they seem to be popular in my country and they sell out quickly too.
It was hard to get one when I wanted to buy one.
Luckily, I was able to get one before the customers bought out the whole batch. Lol!

Yeah, I hate drawing with a mouse. It’s so hard especially if you’re trying to draw a complex scene or a simple drawing. Lol! :stuck_out_tongue:

Whether you want to buy a Cintiq, or a normal Drawing Graphics tablet.
It’s all up to you and what you feel comfortable using.

Enjoy and good luck!
