I feel like this is a very important subject to talk about and I want to know everyone’s thoughts on the matter ?
This video is an example of how a lot of people are starting to perceive Developers who use Assets ? There are also people in this community as this guy mentions in hes video who are not devs but are here to find Devs who use assets and than attack or shine a light on them in a negative way.
I understand that a lot of people have abused that asset store and that this is a controversial subject but I think it’s important to the talk about how this is hurting the reputation of devs who use assets the right way and actually put in the work.
So feel to share whatever you want on the matter, all opinions thoughts and feelings are welcome
If a developer uses an asset according to the terms it was provided, how can it not be “the right way”.
Non-exclusive assets are always going to be somewhat problematic. Say my favourite Youtube star has a tendency to use some Incompetech tune as their outro music, in my mind it becomes there’s, then I hear it on someone else’s channel, perhaps not knowing how the world works I get upset because they have “stolen” it.
I suppose the right way from my perspective is using assets to build something original. For instance if you build an original game with original gameplay and than you want to build a world for you character, say a beach.
What does it matter if the palm tree you have in there is original or bought when most palm trees look the same in reality lol as long as your placement and design of the so stage is original does it really matter if you personally modeled that palm tree or not
Depends how seriously you want to take things, if you want to regard a game as an artistic work, cobbling together a hodgepodge of different artists work and trying to mash them together to achieve a cohesive look… is that ever going to be equivalent to an entirely bespoke creation designed from the ground up to achieve a vision…
Anyway if that’s acceptable then the solution is simple, asset makers and stores can’t sell complete or almost complete games. These are almost always sold much cheaper than the game itself might be valued at… if you put something up for sale and I see I can make 10 times as much with a few hours to finish and market it, someone is going to take that offer.
I totally understand your feelings bro. Video games are ART combined with Technology so ofcourse it would be sweet to have everything 100 % original. Because art is special like that, and even if no one can tell this tree from that it still makes it special, I get that.
But I do think that the design aspect of game dev is a challenge in itself, and one can be original with there design using assets.
