Asset Contest! Win Unity 3.4 + Android Pro and more (over $5K total in prizes!)

Hey Unity Fans!

All of us here at design3 are thrilled to announce our first ever game development contest where we’ll be offering prizes worth over $5,000 to acquire spaceships and game props for the Unity game we’re developing, 51 Run.

Prizes include Unity 3.4 + Android Pro, Substance Designer 2, Mixamo credits, design3 Memberships, we’ll feature the winners’ work in the game and much more.

The contest is calling for designers to submit art for two modeling and texturing categories: 1) Make a spaceship 2) Create game props.

The winning spaceship model will be used in the game to whisk the alien away safety and can be anything from a typical circular UFO to an intergalactic space rocket. Game props are tools or furnishings utilized in the game. Examples include laboratory equipment (microscopes and beakers), tools for recapturing and escape (large butterfly nets and gigantic hammers), to ground floor desert props (cactuses and rattlesnakes). Click here for guidelines and examples.

Entries are being accepted now through September 30th.

Ohhh lordy…

That’s the whole premise of the content, dude, your making art for them, they give you prizes.

That’s not entirely true - if the first clause i quoted would be limited to WINNERS of some prize okay, in that particular case this is content harvesting in my eyes

Hmm, interesting…

Hmmm… Unity Pro license… drools

Well I guess it makes sense they keep all the submitted ships, right? For $3000+ worth of prizes, getting just a few ships isn’t worthit, it’s cheaper to hire an artist!

I guess this contest works as a fun way of getting advertisement, and getting plenty of ships for their game. They’re also entitled to sell the submitted work, so it could work as funding for their game as well.

Seems fair to me, but you really gotta be sure you’ll be nº1 with this thing. I’ll be open here! the main thing is the Unity Pro license, am I right? haha! Other prizes are quite cool but… not AS cool! hehe n__n

Either do join in or don’t join in, if you don’t agree to their terms, don’t join in, if you agree to their terms, do join in, you could always submit your work with a legal document stating that if the contest is terminated prior to winners announced, use of your work is strictly forbidden and you can also add a legal clause to your work that denies them rights to sell, modify or distribute your works without prior written consent. Just because they have a contest clause doesn’t mean you can’t have a content clause. Legal goes both ways, trust me on this one.

If you submit your work with a legal notice for intent of use, they must abide by your notice. Either way, don’t submit unless you feel comfortable with agreements from both sides, from you and from them.

@zumwalt
Can I put a clause that says they can only use my ship if I win? X)

j/k

$3000 is nothing for the work they will probably recieve,
You pretty much nailed it on the head with the last part of that sentence: they do it because it’s cheaper THAN hiring an artist …
But of course Zumwalt is right: everbody can choose to take part in the contest, or not …

I’d LOVE Unity Pro or Substance Designer so I think it’s worth a shot…Just one question though, if I create something I understand that if I submit it it becomes the property of design3, but can I use it as an example in a demo reel or portfolio after the contest is over?

Thanks!

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all of the comments! Good points brought up by everyone. Basically, our goals for the contest are to involve the community, get great props for the game, and have some fun with prizes. We certainly don’t intend on exploiting anyone’s efforts - we just want to make sure the submitted props aren’t already published elsewhere. Not only will the winners be credited, but all entrants will be credited for their participation in the contest.

@avedis777: Entrants can absolutely use their props in demo reels and portfolios! In fact, the winners will be able to post bragging rights in their resume and can include in-game use of their props in their demo reel.

Again, thanks for the posts!

Hmm. Looks very promising. And YAY for all the goodies for the winners.

Jin

Going to enter the Contest : )

Okay - i just looked up your (desing3’s ) profile and that you are indeed some official unity partner etc…
So my initial statements and suspicion might not be appropriate in that specific case…
But generally speaking shady “contests” and conditions are quite a common scheme for some companies to exploit “want to break into XYZ industry” enthusiasts…

.

Well design3 is a reputable website and it has lots of tutorials and resources for Unity and other CG related stuff.

You mention the poly count requirements for props, but not for the spaceship. Would you care to clue us in on that?

To bad I can’t model. Ermmmm. Do you need any special FX? :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with all entries becoming the property of the competition holder. That’s something you either agree to or you don’t. However, reserving the right to change the rules of the competition at their discretion is absurd. It’s along the lines of a blank cheque. You’re agreeing to their terms and conditions, but they reserve the right to change them all. How can you agree to terms and conditions which could change at the whim of the competition holder? How can you make a decision about whether or not to give away your IP without knowing what you’re actually agreeing to?

Not quite. They could alternatively simply not accept your entry into the competition.

The clause to change the rules is probably just there so if something has to be changed they can do it, I don’t think it’s there to give them an open door. I’ve not read many sets of rules for this type of contest but I think most would have rules that seem “absurd” but are necessary.

I’d like to give the spaceship model a shot and more details would be nice, do you need to be able to go inside, fire it up, etc. or just the outside modeled textured, and also a poly count would be cool
