Asset Server Installed OK, Unity Won't Let me Use it.

Hey,

I’m trying to evaluate Unity Asset Server for my company’s game. I read the documentation that came with my Unity 3.1 Pro and found a link to download the Asset Server (Real-time tools for 3D, AR, and VR development | Products), which confused me so here’s question 1.

  1. Don’t I have to pay for the Asset Server? Why can I download it? Is this the wrong version and I shouldn’t download it?

I downloaded it, installed it on two machines and it appears to install fine. I can run it on both machines and get the message, “Server is running.” along with five buttons to click on, Start, Stop, Restart, Reset Admin Password, and Quit.

Then I opened Unity 2.6 on one machine and 3.1 Pro on another. Both would not allow me to choose the option, “Asset Server” from the Window menu because it is grayed out.

  1. What am I doing wrong here? Is this where purchasing the Asset Server comes in? If I can download the Asset Server, what am I purchasing? A license number? Where do I enter that?

Thanks for any info you provide,

  1. You don’t pay for the server. You pay for every client license thats meant to use it and to be able to buy the asset server client license you must own / buy Unity Pro as its an addon for it

  2. Nothing, you just don’t own asset server client licenses thus the grayed out menue

Thanks dreamora,

I wish I could try it before buying it. Know if that’s possible or another way I can learn as much as I can before buying it? I looked for youtube videos and didn’t find any that walked through the features and how to use it.
