Hi!
I have installed the asset server (vmware image) on windows 7 (x86). I’ve completed the installation guide…
I CAN connect to my server from my computer, but my friend can’t!
He gets this error about failing to connect to server and asking if the firewall was accepting connections via port 10733…
I think it has something to do with the fact that I have a dynamic ip adress…
Could you help me?
I’m kinda tired that ANY server I try to run on my pc fails because of my dynamuc ip…
Is your friend connecting to the asset server over the Internet? In that case, have you routed port 10733 to your computer’s local IP address (which should be set to static in your router)?
Even without dyndns, your friend should be able to connect to your current IP-adress, otherwise, something else is wrong.
You can get your current external IP address with e.g. http://ip.nu/
DynDns is a good solution, since your friend do not have to contact you to get your new ip address every time he cannot connect.

no-ip.org works too, thats what I am using
Thank you all for your replies.
@zelk:
yes, he is connecting over the Internet and no, I haven’t routed port 10733 to my computer’s local IP address (not sure if I even have a router though ). I’m a total noob in these kinds of questions so any help would be very much appreciated…
ps
I have already got an account on no-ip but I couldn’t figure out how to use it for the asset server…
there is nothing to figure out. have the tool running on your asset server machine, setup the TCP port 10733 forward to that machine in your router and thats it (given software firewalls are setup right)
after that hand out your no-ip url you have for that machine to your friend and he can connect
hmm, I kinda don’t have a router…))))
anyway, thanks for your help
how do you have multiple machines then?
does your ISP offer you multiple ips?
because otherwise it won’t work. with 1 ip only and multiple machines it can only fail for all kind of incomming stuff (including starting your own games in warcraft3 etc). if thats the case you need to get a router first before anything else
No, I have got only one machine and my friend’s computer is on the other side of town.
PS (just in case)
Yes, my ISP does offer multiple IPs
if you only have 1 machine it shouldn’t be a problem given your software firewall allows pg_ctrl to receive tcp connections on port 10733 (and given your isp has not blocked any incoming connection completely to ensure you follow the contract part about not hosting servers at home)
thank for your help…
I’ll keep trying…
So, here’s what I’ve done so far:
-installed Unity Asset server for Windows from here:Real-time tools for 3D, AR, and VR development | Products
-created a host at DynDNS.com that points to my ip
-started the Unity Asset server via server control
-cheked that it works in Unity (both my IP and the Host) (yes, it does)
…EPIC FAIL!
Still doesn’t work on my friend’s PC! (could not connect to myip )
ps
firewalls configured correctly both on my pc and my friend’s one…
PROBLEM SOLVED:
I’ve installed hamachi and created a vpn amongst all the develpoers and it worked!
