It looks like Asset Store reduction are almost 30% every time, it’s hard to find 50% like before.
Or did i miss lot of sales ?
.
You probably don’t see many 50% off ones because if something is like 20 dollars normally, dropping down to 10 dollars and then Unity taking their cut pretty much means around 6 dollars a sale. (Just random number), it’s around that though.
So it’s easier to do 30% off and then unity take their cut which pretty much equals out to 50% off.
Unity experiments with what is the correct balance for them in terms of traffic and revenue. Most of the publishers were of the opinion that 50% off was actually hindering sales because it was high enough of a discount that any of the disposable purchases would just wait for a sale instead of having a natural flow to it.
The publishers in the end decide the amount they want to be able to discount it if they are selected. I think most have dialed back the discount. There have been no indication from Unity over the last 9 months or so that overall health of the marketplace has been hurt so I think in general the lower discounts are here to stay. The last time a comment was made on it the asset store was still growing.
If 50% off, developer share only 35% of regular price.
In calculation, you need 30% more people to reach the same revenue of 30% discount. It may hard to increase 30% more sale. I think the 30% discount is the balance point.
For occasionnal buyers, when there is 50% reduction we are tempted to buy a good product even if we don’t need it right now, while 30% just don’t work and we will wait until we have a project that needs the plugin and buy it whatever it is on sale or not.
Anyway as you said 30% is perhaps the good balance.
