Assets won't load/cannot reimport?

Hi all,
I have a project that I’ve been working on for a few months, left it alone for a bit, and now when I attempt to open it, it loads with the assets folder completely empty. I’ve tried reimporting them, creating a new project and importing them, but any attempts to import something just has me select the asset to import, then… nothing. No error, no importation, just looks as though I didn’t do anything.
I’ve tried loading backups, updating Unity to the latest version, opening other old projects (the problem persists with all of them), and I’m not sure what to do. If I manually go to the game folder, all of the assets are clearly there, just as I left them, but they just will not load up in Unity at all.
Any advice? I’m on a Mac, if that matters.

I have the same problem. Assets no longer open in Unity. They download but, but instead of “import”, it shows “download” in the Import tab again and when pressing the wheel spins for hours, nothing happens. I am on Apple Mojave 10.14.2

This webpage suggests the issue was fixed in Unity 5.4.6f3:

Since you mentioned you “left it alone for a bit,” using an older version of Unity could be the problem. In my case, I was transferring a Unity 5.3 project to a new computer. Upgrading to Unity 2019.2 fixed the issue: all assets were imported and working again. Amazingly, the update didn’t break my game, either.
