AssetStore Submission Tips&Tricks

Hi there, currently it takes at least a week for me to get submissions declined/accepted and every decline hurts as hell.

So why not collect some useful tips and tricks from seller and buyers alike to help fellow AssetStore submitters to improve their submissions (to get faster accepted and to aid customers with a better product).

Recently I got rejected multiple times because some of some points I never occurred before… so here is my list:

  • Unity Technologies wants that we call Unity Unity and Unity Pro Unity Pro, nothing more, so no Unity3D, Unity Indie, Basic oder Free.
  • You need to add your contact information into your documentation to aid customers with technical problems. The contact information should be accessable/viewable without much clicks.
  • If you include a step by step tutorial into your documentation ensure that the result does look good (yes, this was a point once for me)
  • The documentation should be a pdf file, a html file or similar is not enough.
  • No demo features, the asset must work without restrictions, so if you plan to add a trial for pro features, don´t do this.

I also collected some other useful things for the presentation of your submission inside the AssetStore to increase reachability and sales:

  • Add a clear description for your asset, avoid fill words or empty phrases. Tell what your assets does and not how nice the results will look like that’s what screenshots, eg. are for.
  • Screenshots are a must have, even when you provide only code, you can always show something oiff, even if its only the well readable code.
  • Provide a documentation which is accessible without buying the asset, which is essential for code only assets. People want to know what your API may offer.
  • Videos or Webplayer allow potential customers to look into interactive or animated results without the need of a demo version. Nobody likes to buy something where the results are unclear.
  • If you provide screenshots or other preview material which is not included into your asset (a bigger demo or something like this), tell so. You may receive negative reviews otherwise.
  • Provide information about the compatibility along the various platforms, this includes which Unity version (Unity/Unity Pro) and Android/iOS/eg. This may be hard to test, but try to ask friends or fellow forum users or start a beta test.
  • Provide support. No support will lead to bad reviews and the word about your bad support will spread.
  • Keep your images professional/stylistic. By doing this you will increase the chance to be showcased, which will lead to massive sales.
  • Advertise your assets in this forum. Work in Progress for further/running developments. Showcase for projects which will use/show your asset. Asset Asset Store to promote your finished products and to provide support. Presence will lead to sales, even if this presence is support or help for other problems. If your thread is visible at the first page then yay! But don´t spam or push without reason!
  • Try to write mindful, no slang or similar. Keep cool and professional, even when destructive criticism appears. Often enough loyal customers/users will aid you to keep you safe from unjustified insults, eg.

Also a little rant: Why do I need to wait another week to get the results from the AssetStore reviewer for a a minor fix (to fix something like a typo inside the documentation)? God this is so annoying!

This is a great initiative, should be extended and pinned to the Assets and Asset Store section I think.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the tips. So far I’ve never had a rejected submission. I pushed the latest version of my asset yesterday and it got approved today. The last iteration was a week, so times seem to be all over the place. One thing though… this time I got a note saying the removed the link to my product website because it also linked to another store that sells my Asset. Essentially, the product page on my website has links to both the Asset Store and my asset on FastSpring. They said it was a violation so they removed the link from my description. I’m still waiting on clarification as to which EULA term I violated, but it’s something to watch for.

Its possible that this violates the “5.5 Non-Compete” point, but reading the point, I dont see why something outside the AssetStore (which your page is) will violate this. Also many other asset providers do exactly this, link to their page, which contains alternative payment options to the Unity AssetStore.

Would be good if you keep us informed about this issue

Yeah I can’t find anything in there either. I’ll let you know as soon as I get a definitive answer.

Sticky this.

Sticky this - this info is beneficial for EVERYONE - UT, asset store submitters

Here is the official response:

Evidently, because my website links to another way to buy the Asset (it links to both FastSpring and the Asset Store by the way… right next to eachother), they’re claiming it’s primary purpose is to facilitate distribution of Assets outside of the Asset Store.

I find it a bit disconcerting to be honest. Kind of shoots holes in the whole “non-exclusive” policy. The vast majority of my sales are generated through the Asset Store and my Asset works as intended… I also do not sell any other Assets (either on the store or my site) so I’m baffled as to how they think that’s the primary purpose.

Do not add any additional menu options to the top menu bar. It is okay to add an option as a sub-menu to an existing item on the top menu bar, for instance you can add a component to the Component menu item, but DO NOT add a menu item that will appear right next to ‘Component’ on the top menu bar. You will be rejected, as Unity wants to reserve that space for future additions and doesn’t want it to become cluttered.

Another good tip.

Is there alternative to asset store that is not walled garden?

Depends. I use FastSpring as well but it takes more work to setup, although I’ve also used their notifications to integrate with my own website. From a sales perspective, using the Asset Store is still your best bet. They take a higher percentage but you have better visibility and the direct integration with the Unity Editor is a big plus.

You could also sell directly if you wanted.
