Autodesk announces Max 9 and Maya 8

i believe you mean… max9 and maya8!?

Good catch!

^^ thanks for the link btw

mm… 64bit…

Ok, it is time to see how the Autodesk’s people improves Maya or send it to its final stage. :?:

I didn’t see any thing about them actually planning on a mac version of maya 8. I know this has been the topic of a few discussions here since autodesk acquired alias. I assume that the mac version is still alive because they haven’t said otherwise. Lets just hope!

Hopes for the insane: Autodesk anouncment about Maya and Max for Mac at WWDC, lol. Jeff

Check out this page: Autodesk | 3D Design, Engineering & Construction Software they mention Windows and Linux for the 64 bit part but not Mac OS. On the other hand Mac OS is mentioned at the bottom of the page along with a note saying that features will not be the same on all platforms.

Its obvious the top part is talking about Maya 8, the bottom part though could be talking about Maya 7. Ah this is so anoying, just when I learn a 3D app I might lose the chance to keep using it. Jeff

Well even if they do drop support for it, maya 7 probably wont go out of date for a while. I mean it still has a ton of features that the low budget modeling apps haven’t even considered. So it will last us for a while, but it is disappointing to say the least.

Oh, and what will happen to Motionbuilder? It’s one of my most valuable tools (both literally and figuratively).

EDIT: And, by extension, FBX?

FBX is becoming even more important to Autodesk. They seem to really be beefing it up to promote interoperability between Max and Maya, but that probably means everyone else will have to update their importers to be 100% compatible. As for Motionbuilder, 7.5 is the latest version and they eliminated the lower priced edition.

Ouch, well the page doesn’t entirely dismiss OSX, but reading between the lines makes me a little wary of OSX support in the future. I’ve said it before… Autodesk has some weird bias against the Mac platform. I think we’ll see Maya 8 for OSX (perhaps “crippled” or “different”), but beyond that I’m really curious what is going to happen.

I’m too attached to Maya. I’ll buy another PC and switch over (yet again) if it comes to that. Aargh!

Maya 8 is stated for OS X in both complete and unlimited versions (Autodesk | 3D Design, Engineering & Construction Software). The only difference for the Mac appears to be the lack of availability of an explicit 64-bit version.

Hardware
Minimum requirements for 32-bit versions:
Windows: Intel® Pentium® IV or higher, AMD Athlon® processor
Macintosh®: Power Mac® G5

could that mean that it isn’t even universal yet?

That’s what it sounds like to me. :frowning:

I didn’t know all this before I got a copy of Maya 7 for my Intel iMac. It’s barely usable. Fortunately, I was able to transfer the license back to a pc, but it would sure be nice to have a working copy on the same machine as Unity.

No 64 support OR UB? What is this? I have never liked autodesk; Right from the day they bought Alias.

Boot Camp anyone :?:

It’s a little too early to jump to conclusions here, isn’t it?

Remember, the ONLY pro desktop machine available right now is a PowerMac G5.
It’s odd they don’t use a processor but an actual machine to describe the requirement. It’s most likely lazy writing more than anything else. Does that really mean I won’t be able to run it at all on a PowerMac G4 that’s tricked out? Maybe, but I’m skeptical.

Just wait for more solid details. Discreet may be biased against Apple, but Maya sales to Mac users offer a significant part of the revenue from the product. You can’t tell me Discreet likes to throw revenue away without a very good reason (besides bias.)

The 64 bit version of Maya for Mac OS X may be forth-coming. Perhaps they are privy to some insights about Leopard that makes it worth delaying. Just speculating and probably a bit too hopeful, too.

Come on people, don’t panic. There will be a UB version of Maya eventually, probably Sig07… I mean why are we patiently waiting for the Adobe Suite to be UB’fied? Maya has a huge amount of code in it… lot more then say Photoshop, and I remember reading once that it has more lines of code then OSX (or was that OS9…)

The reason we Mac users don’t see 64bit apps (other then command line based apps) is because Apple in their greater wisdom haven’t made the OSX gui 100% 64 bit yet… and all these apps require 64bit enabled ‘OSes’. I guess we will need to wait and see what Apple releases in the way of workstation based Intel Macs to see what they are planning, and thinking, maybe. I suspect the first round of workstations won’t be based on the Intel 64bit chips… but I hope I’m wrong and they announce that Leopard is 100% 64bit across the board.

Cheers.

How quickly OS X’s 64-bit support continues to grow is a question (and Leopard may be a big answer)–but on the hardware side I DO think Apple’s Intel-based pro workstations will use 64-bit chips. The G5 is 64-bit now, and Core 2 is 64-bit too.

ah yes, you’re right. I forgot that  But Apple does need to make it’s OS fully 64bit ready if we want to see 64bit DCC apps.

cheers.
