AutoSuck IFF to Image converter

Hey guys

Im trying to make autodesks totally useless IFF image format readable by photoshop. I know theres a converter out there somewhere, ie a plugin file you can drop in the photoshop plugins folder, but after an hour of trawling the net, I cant find it… The one on highend 3d is being read as a word document, and I thought it was on the nVidia developer tools website, but I cant seem to find it…

Does anyone know where it is?

It was origionally in a package of plugins called “Professional apps Photoshop reader” or similar. Any help would rock.

The IFF format is most definately the most useless thing autodesk has contributed to this world. Its a total time waster as best I can see.

Actually, I think IFF came from DPaint for the Amiga (if my dusty brain cells serve me correctly). There’s a plugin for the GIMP ( Best Open Source Mac Software Development Software 2024 ) if you don’t find anything for PS.

EDIT: There’s also this: http://www.highend3d.com/downloads/tools/photoshop_plugins/61.html
(google is your friend  ).

Cheers BigK

I’d love to support gimp, but for some weird reason, My computer refuses to accept that x11 is installed. It seems to need x11 for gimp to run( and also an app called inkscape), but no matter how I install x11 (Including the Panther build of x11 from apple) I keep getting an error message saying I need to install it.

Fun and Games I tell you!

Thanks though,

AC

GIMP on OS X is a bit of a hack. I’m pretty used to it and find it to be faster than PS, but it lacks the plugins and other features.

Sounds like you’re not running X11 before launching GIMP, that’ll give you that error. There’s a script out there that will launch X11 automatically when you click on the GIMP icon, google will find it if you’re interested. Otherwise, launch X11 first and leave it running, then launch GIMP. You don’t need Inkscape (although it’s also not a bad app). I wish the OS developers behind GIMP had their act together as well as the Blender devs do. It’s been a couple years since GIMP has been updated for OS X.

EDIT: I’ll take that back. GIMP 2.4 RC for Intel Mac is available for download: GIMP.app - Browse Files at SourceForge.net

Hmmm, no luck Im afraid. What a drag, I can see the thumbnail if I select “All readable formats” as an import format option in photoshop but still wont open the file.

I tried running x11 then running gimp but same old error. Why dont autodesk just ditch the IFF format and save us the pain? Its a completely usless format.

RIGHT> found a free version of sketchup pro on some autodesk discs, which is not actually professional at anything. Luckily can read IFF and add a T to become TIff.

What a ridiculous pipline. I feel like Im in microsoft PC land.

Thanks though.BTW The plugin didnt work Ive got photoshop 5 installed and CS2

GraphicConverter will fix them. You can use it to do a batch convert. I know from bitter experience… bloody Maya IFF format.

Mind you I get the same issue sometimes with Modo TIFFs… not opening in PS. GC comes to the rescue though.

Cheers.

I agree with you Aaron… I have no idea why Maya refuses to adopt some other format as the default (besides IFF being able to store an extra 8bit depth channel which is kinda cool). Anyway, here’s the PS plug-in to read IFF.

[Edit] Oops, I posted the wrong plug-in. The MayaIFF one is the one you probably want.

Yay! Thanks Ethan. Much Appreciated.

Id savedout some pics from Maya and although I thought they were .psd’s they ended up being picture.psd.iff’s…I put a pic into a renderosity competition, I used what you taught me about layered textures for the table in the foreground:

Thanks!

CLEARLY, the easiest way to open iff files and “save as” ( image or batch ) would be fcheck? It takes seconds to convert a mistaken iff image sequence to targa or otherwise.

Forget the rest,

JW

Thanks for that. Never once in my life have I used fcheck for anything. I just havent felt the need to check my f’s, I just let them fly…

Targos, I had that same exact problem with X11. I remember somebody on the #idevgames irc chat room was able to give me an X11 dmg installer for Tiger. Worked like a charm

Ask around there.
