Hello everyone!
I would like to start develop with Unity3D. Mainly, i’ll do it on my PC, where i have plenty of disk space free, so the project size isn’t the problem, but sometimes i will use a laptop. And here comes my question - how much disk space an average unity project needs? I’m stuck with 128GB SSD, so i suppose there will be about 30-40GB free space for Unity’s projects and assets. Will it be enough?
It depends on how many projects you will have at a given time. Our projects are usually just demos, and they are easily 500MB-2GB in size. If you have a good number of assets, you can expect to top 4-12GB per project.
It also depends on what you mean by an average project. A full-length, asset-heavy desktop game can be 40+ GB plus extra for the version control cache. Keep in mind, too, that Unity maintains a Library folder that can be quite large. (The largest project I’ve consulted on is 100 GB including Library folder and VCS cache.) But a simple mobile game can be under 1 GB.
Thanks for answers.
I definitely won’t develop a full-length game on this laptop. Generally, i intend to use it only on gamedev science club’s meetings or game jams, so projects definitely will be not that big.
You’re probably fine then. I do stuff like that on my Macbook Air sometimes and for smaller stuff it hasn’t been a problem, aside from general performance.
If your developing mobile games (or just games for older, weaker PC’s) then it kind of helps to have slower machine - because the things that will cause severe lag are more apparent while still in the editor! Yep, that’s my excuse for not upgrading to a new laptop in a few years ![]()
