Awesome! It was about time, that someone showed, that unity is a very capable game|dev tool with lots of great effects…! I cant really wait to see, where this all will end
And i really like the boss-animation! He looks absolutly stunning. I guess the feet are getting some extra joints to make him a bit more agile, right? The rest is really superb!
The design and architechture is also really great! I like those large open places… and it has quite style of its own. Looks alien and somehow familiar at the same time… Very well done!
thanks for the nice feedback! it’s really great to be at a point now where everything is coming together.
i thought i could finish the level in my internship last year but it was just too optimistic. i spent two of the three months doing concept art and the main characters. and initially it was extremely hard for me to build the level. it also makes a difference if you just apply a texture from some kind of library or if you actually have to construct and zbrush your floor plates for example. in the first half of 2006 i had to finish university and then i went on with building the level. i’ll be at OTEE next week and hopefully we will be able to finish it then.
I like the bridge and the atmosphere there. This looks good. Reminds me of HL2! :O) The other screenshots are not so much my style, too much Albert Speer.
I didn’t say that it was your intention to do so but it was the first thing i thought of whilst i was looking at the screenshots. The wide open places with big architectue and the golden statues…
I’m not such much of a mech game type player but don’t they also prefer this kind of architecture? I rember there once was even a big discussion about the ending scene in george lucas first star wars movie when they walked down this big hall with all the soldiers standing there…
well, from what i get speer was also heavily inspired by roman architecture. hence the statues and columns. i also looked at a lot of that. to give the feeling of a once great (albeit peaceful) civilization (your home) which was invaded and extinct by those robot-like creatures.
anyway, i’m not really architecturally educated, which also made me have a big inner conflict when doing the level. in the sense of, you don’t have a clue about something but are still doing it, and try to not make it look too amateurish.
Would a peaceful civilisation really come up with such an architecture? I somehow doubt it…
As for the pro/amateur issue your stuff isn’t looking bad but i guess that this will be an issue more and more as we’re going highpoly and as soon as displacement mapping is common they will use it and if you’re not doing a fantasy/comic scenario or develope your own unique style more and more architects or modellers with some architecture background will do this work as otherwise the reality will look somehow wrong. I remember this problem already showed up in the game wheel of time from legend in 1999. If i’m right they worked with architects to get their buildings done right.
Taumel is right here from a general point of view. But i wouldnt leave out creativity and talent. Some people really can do stuff without professional training.
There is already the possibility to study architecture for game environment, as far as i know, so what taumel mentioned here is applying to most situations, otherwise ther wont be a need for those people ;). But if one can come up with the right ideas and get proportions like doors, roomscaling etc. right, one can create unique stunning environments, even as “civilian”. Thats my opinion here.
Sure, the architechture here is still far from being finished, but its quite a sight already and it doesnt feel wrong or aggressive at all. Open Spaces are a sign of freedom or may be just a display of wealth… There are so many different ways to look at these pics… lets see it, when its filled with live. I like it!
