I am having some trouble baking a large ambient oc map. Is there a limiting factor I dont know of? It seems that with the same settings and a smaller resolution it will bake fine. Any thoughts?

It would probably be useful to know which tool you are using to bake?
Ah true - mental ray. I am thinking that I might be running out of memory for such a large map.

Anything above 2048x2048 with rays bumped up over 150, final gather quality above 1.0, the number of samples above 2, and you may as well set this thing to render overnight (or a long nap ). I’m on a slower machine, but I’m guessing this stuff just takes a long time to compute. Also a thing to remember that is crucial… Mental Ray is size dependent meaning if the object you’re trying to bake is very large (like one of your ships Bill) then it calculates it differently. You might want to try shrinking your ship down and then trying to bake the AO.
