I just want to try and get a quick sanity check with you guys that already made projects with free Unity 3D.
I’d be very thankful if you could help me know if I will be able to do the following:
- Very small 3D game (1, maybe 3 levels)
- Simple block building/destroying physics
- Background skybox + simple geometry + textures + lightmaps + some real-time lights
- Simple music and sound FX
- Local or online Multiplayer
This simple project in under a month, full-time, without much javascript knowledge but a lot of videogame custom mapping/3D/texturing/lighting experience and decent overall scripting experience?
I do understand it ALWAYS depends on MANY factors. But I’d be very very thankful if you’d at least quickly “guestimate” to give me some sort of idea. I just came out of 1 year and a half of making a TF2 map, I can’t afford to do that again!
Thanks,
MQ
(note: I also do apologize if this kind of thread is unwelcome here, or sound stupid, I really do, but I gotta ask.)
Yes you could do all the above in your post. Some scripting required, but nothing that would be TOO taxing.
P.S. Thank you for not asking if you can make an MMO
Unity free is 100% capable of doing all those thing. It just depends on your skill level.
Yes, but I doubt you’d be able to do it in under a month unless you were already familiar with Unity. It just takes some time to learn.

Thanks for the quick replies, folks!
Ok, so I could do all that. Great!
Under a month, with 0 knowledge of Unity but a lot for many other editors/3D apps still a long shot? I don’t necessarily want to finish it under 30 days, but at least release a very solid version online.
Extra questions, for free!!! :
What about once you got a game to release, how does it work? Is there a free noob-friendly Unity sponsored website (or just their own website’s upload section!) where you can upload them for testing? Or you must make a deal with some flash gaming/unity websites and pay to have it available online? Maybe I can just put it on my own website?
Major thanks!
You can put it wherever you want. Kongregate accepts Unity games and Wooglie consists solely of Unity games. Or you can easily stick it on your own site. You don’t have to pay. For testing purposes, search for formus for UnityPaste or something like that. It’s basically pastebin for Unity web players.
Ok, so all these mini game hosts are free! Interesting.
Frank, jtman, Eric and niosop, thanks for the info!
… let’s do this.
