I am presently using a 2 year old MacbookPro and finding that it is not the optimal machine for creating Unity content.
Could any of you PC guys advise on what you would recommend for Unity Pro.
Thanks

I use a 2011 macbook pro. It’s sweet for Unity Pro, because things like Beast work better under OSX (it can use more memory). And it’s plenty fast for 3d and the cpu is smoking fast too.
This is what I am running.

thats a perfectly capable machine…it struggles?
just got me a shiney new 17" i7 MacBook pro. runs unity sweet, although im still running indie.
I looked at the benchmarks between the the i5 and the i7 and it appeared substantial. Would be good to create a common test scene and see how it compares among various machines on frame rates.
macbook pro i7. Really fast, runs unity better than any pc laptop in the world. Simply because unity runs better on the mac (beast etc).
Also, nothing stopping you from using bootcamp to put windows on it too
best of all worlds + iOS development…
Thanks Hippo,
Think I will upgrade to the i7. I am running Parallels on my i5 right now.
"Scotty I need more power!!! "
I don’t see anything wrong with that laptop, it shouldn’t struggle with Unity IMO.
shouldent lag with unity, maby theres something wrong with it? as i run:
core 2 duo(2.4ghz).
4gb of ram.
ati moblility radeon.
windows 7.
and have had no problems running unity
but then if you are making something like crysis then it would need to be more powerfull, but just the editor should run fine
I have a three year old macbook pro. 2.53 core 2 duo, 4gb ram and it works fine except for when I have around 5 or more point lights running in the deferred lighting mode. On a side note, beast is powered by cpu right? Would increasing ram help speed up beast at all?
The new i7 mbps are quad core. this will cut lightmapping time almost in half. Plus, the i7 sandy bridge is faster overall, you will not be sorry. Be sure to get the version with the 6770, its even faster yet. Oh, and spring for the SSD.
I also was tempted to buy the more powerful laptop possible to develop my project with Unity Pro, but I realised that it is not good for your project because then you are not forced to optimize it so much and you can find your project running very slowly in mid-low end machines. ![]()
For the love of god dont pay for the HD upgrade. Anybody who buys an apple laptop should get the one with the least ram and the worst HD available. Apple charges you about 3-4 times more for ram than it costs in the real world and the same goes for the HD. Buy the laptop, buy some more ram if you need it, change the HD and you are good to go.
Your warranty is NOT affected! And it is dead easy to install osx. (its what i have done with my mbp)
+1
I have to say that I disagree with this. You can always test your game on slower machines, plus by the time you release it, your super-fast machine may be just average or slow anyway. The most important thing is time and efficiency. Get the fastest machine you can, so you wait less, and code more.
I have a mac book pro i5, a dell latitude and a mac book air. I find myself most of the time on the mac book air since I can easily take it anywhere and work will I am on the way or just in parks and public places. It helps attracts the girls as well ![]()
