Best Program for Textures? (Win 7)

Hello Unity Members,
I was wondering what is the the best program for making realistic textures that supports windows 7.

Thanks BeauTheWinner

Almost any Drawing Application could be used.
In the past I have used Photoshop, Paint.NET and a little bit of GIMP.
In the end you will need to give us more information on what types of textures you are looking for. For example if you wanted Real life looking textures you could always start with a good digial camera and start taking photos, then using Photoshop import them in and start playing around with it so that when you tile it the textures seem seamless. Then again using Photoshop add some filters to a copy of that texture to get your hightmaps and such.

Hey there.

There is no ‘best’ program per se, there are a variety of programs that can all produce the same quality but with varying methods and amounts of time.

Creating a realistic texture of say, metal for example, can be done easily in photoshop and there are a variety of ‘realistic’ tutorials on the subject.

However you could also use GIMP, GIMP is just as powerful as photoshop but the working method and shortcuts are marginally different.

If you want to make textures however, I’d suggest checking out http://www.cgtextures.com/ its a huge catalogue (constantly updated) of textures from photographs, like all good texture sites however they will need a little touching up in external software depending on how and what you wish to apply the texture too.

Personally I’d suggest photoshop, its a little pricy however, and over at the forums we don’t condone any form of software piracy.

any tutorial of how to use well the textures? i am new to unity :frowning:

You can use any standard art package such as Photoshop to create textures, alternatively there are tools such as Filter Forge which are entirely dedicated to texture creation and can simplify matters. At the most dedicated end there’s Substance Designer which is a tricky beast to master but then does have the most powerful texture creation tools that I’ve ever seen, including things such as taking the geometry of a 3d model into account (For ‘edge wear’ and similar effects).
