Best software for Modelling/ Rare-Style FPS Project

Hi, I’m new here and still learning about Unity and coding in general.

I’ve had past experience with Game Maker, but never with an engine like Unity or UDK. I wanted to make a source mod in the vein of classic FPS games like Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, and Timesplitters, but decided to make it a full-blown game.

I’m currently looking into 3D modeling projects like Blender and Maya, and I’m wondering what would be the best option for a beginner. I want the look of my game to be simplistic and slightly cartoony, but with realistically proportioned and featured characters, like a more minimalistic Red Steel 2 or Borderlands.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? I may make this a commercial product eventually, so I don’t want Modtool or anything that will cost me 2000 dollars before I can put my project on Steam (If it ever reaches that point.) A free modeling program would be nice.

Any tips or advice from experienced developers or modders would be greatly appreciated

For a borderlands-type look, use try blender (free) for modeling, and if you have unity pro, use the detect edges camera effect.

I’m pretty sure Blender was the way to go, since it’s free and generally used in cartoony games. I’m still looking for an FPS prefab though, one that’s just a barebones First-Person camera and weapon setup. I plan on editing it further after I’ve tested it out to give it that goldeneye/timesplitters feel. Do you know any besides the FPS tutorial on the main Blender webpage?

And thanks for pointing out the detect edges tool. a high-contrast style with simplistic colors and thicker edges is what I’m going for.

If you want to put your project on Steam you’ll have to spend 1500$ on the pro version as the free version doesn’t accept any native plugin and Steam client must be integrated into your Unity project.
As a side note:
I recommend you to focus one thing at time. Coding, modeling and designing simultaneously wont get you any further. If you wanna master your coding skill, just focus on that, develop an ugly prototype with your game mechanics ideas. The powerside of Unity is that it let you test out your ideas very quickly without almost no(or little) knowledge of the editor. You can also get free resources and create a simple game with free assets.
Same goes for the other areas, wanna focus on 3D modeling? That’s fine, grab a copy of blender or Sketchup and few tutorials. I never worked with Blender (we mostly work with Max and Maya) but Blender it’s free, other than that Maya PLE can also help you out.

Though, learning how to mod a game is also a very solid way to get some industry tool experience. Specially if you like level design.
Cheers,

Camera effects are disabled in the free version.

Maya costs a lot too. Blender is the only fully functional free modeler.

Maya PLE doesn’t exist anymore.

I’ve fooled around with a couple free engines and trust me, I know it’s no cakewalk. I’m also aware of the unity-to steam process that will cost me 1500$, but I still think it’s a better deal than UDK’s royalty fees.

As of now, I’m just learning the code and watching tutorials on youtube. When I’ve got it down, I’ll start configuring the base FPS System and doodling a couple of stock models on blender as prototypes. In the end, If everything works out, and I’m not busy at the moment, I’ll see if there are any modders or other Unity members who might be able to help me with the project. I’m certainly going to need some help with models and textures if I ever want to get this product on steam ( If it even gets to that point.).

I’m honestly more concerned about tweaking and balancing the weapons and enemies. I’d rather leave modelling to people who’ve had more experience.

If this ever goes commercial, I’d mostly work on script writing, Level design, and control/gameplay tweaks. In the end, It’s just a concept. Maybe I’ll end up using UDK. Maybe I’ll make an adventure game instead. Who knows? I’m just trying to get some more programming knowledge under my belt, and I thought a Serious Sam/ Goldeneye type game would be fun to make.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll probably be making a TF2 map too, level design really interests me.
