The title of this thread basically says it, but I particularly
mean getting inspiration for making games on Unity3D.
Like what’s the story of the game or the objective of it.
I literally have everything to create a game, except for
the ideas needed to construct the video game in Unity.
I need ways to get influenced or to get inspiration…
(EDIT)
Thank you for reading this forum thread and here is a list of ways:
Experiencing Life
Teaming Up
Train Bad Ideas
Look On The Forums
Output Requires Input
Seriously, just go out & experience life. Inspiration comes at unexpected moments from seeing, doing, hearing something so go expose yourself to life & be prepared to quickly jot down any random thing. Who knows where it may lead, & don’t be too rational when following those ideas to see where they do lead you.
Ted’s right, but I think there’s a step before that that’s necessary: You need to practice just coming up with ideas. Good ideas, bad ideas, just ideas. Think about them, write them down… Filter out the bad ones.
Long ago, I had zero ideas. I thought it was who I was, and that I simply wasn’t a creative person. I accepted that as my lot in life.
But as I grew older, I tried harder. My ideas were crap at this point, but I kept playing with them anyhow.
Eventually, I realized I was starting to get good ideas. Then soon after, I started to realize I was getting ideas from things I was experiencing… An advertisement for a TV show would push an entire idea for what it could be in my head, and was generally way different than what that show actually was. (And I often liked my idea better!) I’d see something happen around me in real life and think it might make a good game. Someone would say something and it’d spark a funny idea in my head.
Since then, the ideas have slowed, they’ve increased. I quite often write down new ideas that I have in my Google Docs folder, and I have enough of them that my wife usually fails to find time to read them. (Not blaming her!)
In short, try. Try to come up with ideas, write them down, massage them. Come up with more ideas, even if they’re bad, and work them through.
Skills are improved through practice, and coming up with ideas is a skill, not an innate talent.
Keep poking around until you fall in love with someone’s game… and when they just abandon it one day out of the blue (I think that normally happens on the 10th day of each month) try making your own interpretation of their same idea.
Games don’t exist in complete isolation from other games, every game is sort of like some other game(s) but with changes here, inspiration there… to make even a small complete game you need a wealth of creative resources to draw from.
Trying to create a game from NOTHING, just closing your eyes and expecting something to go poof… that is not how the human creative process works. Output requires input.
I haven’t ever used them, and I don’t advocate the use of hard drugs. But… if you want to get really imaginative, you do want to alter your current state of mind. I have found that lots of spicy foods, pizza and caffeinated soda beverages combined with watching weird anime/playing obscure games can give you some really weird dreams. Try that!
Truth is if you knew where your favorite game’s creator got the idea from, in many cases you’d probably be surprised at how much “ripping off” is involved.
I recently learned that Disney’s Lion King is a pretty good ripoff of this cartoon called Kimba the white lion. It’s real, I couldn’t believe it. It’s on YouTube you can watch and see.
Boy these idea guys will be pissed when they find out someone actually made a game of their idea instead of just talking about what great idea they have but they just need you to make it reality. Not even to mention how affraid they are someone will ‘steal’ their idea. For anyone without good ideas the forum is an absolute candystore where the candy is free.
All of those sound interesting and good ways to get inspiration (exspecially experiencing life one) I’m gonna make a list on this forum for all the ways you can/could get inspiration for this type of stuff in video game development.
