Billboard texture above object... {Confused @.@}

Ok… I’m seriously confusing myself on this topic, checking the other topics similar to this I’m just confusing myself (not only that, but the ones that I thought would help the most, and link’s have forbidden access XP).

What I want to do is I want to get a texture to pop-up above an object. It would say Read, Talk, Open, and stuff like that. (depending on what I set my texture to) If you’re having a hard time seeing it, think about how the Mario games (And various other games) do it. You’re standing next to ‘character A’ for about .25 seconds, and a “Talk” icon pops up above their head. Not above the player’s head, not on the GUI, but above the object (‘character A’ in this instance).

I want to make it as user-friendly as possible, and that being just a “slap a texture in the area where it asks for one in the Inspector, and you’re ready to go!” Similar to what I did with the last code I needed help with (but figured it out by myself XP) (Which was the text-array script). I don’t want to touch the script at all once I create it.

I know how to billboard this “object”, but I don’t want to drag new game objects into my prefabs just to get it to work the way I want it to. (Nor do I want to add more meshes than I need to)

I’m not sure what you mean by your final paragraph, but to do this what you want is a GUITexture. The script you write to manage this can create the GUITexture dynamically at run-time when needed and disable or destroy it when not visible.
