BioShock Infinite and First Person games...

Hullo fellow Unityers,

So I just watched the BioShock Infinite trailer and it looks pretty cool, quite nice. Never actually played either of the BioShock games, but it still was impressive…however, it’s not what I wanted to post about. I really just wanted to know if anyone had thought about more visceral camera movement for first person titles (not just shooters!)

The trailer can be watched here. To sum it up, it’s basically some dude getting roughed up, shown in first person view. What really caught my eye was how neat it was watching him get tossed around, then grabbing for the ropes on the balloons…pretty intense.

So why don’t any games use this kind of camera? This doesn’t mean making it super bouncy when you’re running around (might get disorienting), but maybe shaking it up when you try to do long jumps, climb ropes and the like. What could be especially neat would be things like getting grabbed by a boss, tossed around and watching it all in first person view.

I dunno, just seemed like a neat idea. The only game I can really think of that relates to this is Red Steel 2. Despite whatever faults it had, the finishers were very impressive to watch unfold in first person view.

Any thoughts?

Mirror’s Edge?

Im pretty sure that isn’t a gameplay trailer though, I think its pre-rendered.

There are a few games I have seen that use this kind of camera movement, but for the life of me I can’t remember which ones.

Oh yeah, I know that, BioShock (from what I’ve seen) just uses a basic FPS control setup. But the trailer got me thinking of what it would be like to have that style of camera be in a game.

Like already stated Mirror’s Edge is very similar to what you see in that video.

I have that game and with a big tv and big sound it’s very intense. Shame the game itself is kind of sucky unless you really enjoy the parkour bit.

As far as I care it doesn’t have to go all out like Mirror’s Edge, the most important part is having the character in the world instead of just a floating pair of arms. Halo does this and Interstellar Marines will do this as well. Being able to see your legs when moving and crouching helps with the immersion.
