Bitmap applied as material to a cylinder

I have a cylinder (3DS object) and I apply a bitmap (1024x256) as texture , I want to ensure that this bitmap is not stretched and is as close as to its planar view. How should I change the 3DS objects height/width/lenghth etc parameters so that bitmap exactly fits on it?
