Blackberry exits from consumer market

Do you think businessmen like to play games?
First Flash. What’s next, Blackberry?

The problem is (and, it’s echoed in the comments), that while Blackberry made the first successful smartphones, Apple and Google were able to successfully perform the OS/UX integration necessary to bring us to today’s current market (the ones Apple and Google dominate.) Microsoft is widely considered to have failed at entering the mobile market, but it’s not so severe for them, because they have the Windows and MS Office empire to fall back on financially; also, Microsoft has a pretty solid lineup of other products like Windows Server and others.

Blackberry pretty much got washed out of their core conceit, which was being the first to market smartphones. So, no suprise they’re expecting a $1B USD loss. Hopefully they figure things out, but I’m not willing to bet they’ll survive if they try to stay in the consumer market.

I also think it was a mistake from Blackberry to ship their own OS with their phones. Developers are not waiting to support yet another platform and thus the phone will not have that many apps supporting it.

Nokia is more clever in that regard by shipping it with Windows. More clever would be to ship it with Android. Instant access to +850k apps. It just goes to show what corporate BS can do to a company,

Its pretty much Android or die these days… kind of scary. (Well except for IOS but thats only apple.)

plays worlds smallest violin

any new platform that wants to entry a world of really stablished competitors like ios and android should be extremely smart or otherwise just fail miserably, we are no longer in the symbian era where we didnt mind endless flavours and reskins of it and then blackberry looked clearly superior in comparison, but then the technology evolved, and blackberry seemed to remain the same and when they wanted to release a modern phone like the z10 it was too late…

if microsoft and nokia simply couldnt be a worthy opponent, blackberry has absolute no chance against the giant 2 platforms

ubuntu mobile, firefox os or tizen have to do something really smart and unexpected that makes water consumers and developers mouths really quickly or otherwise they will just vanish and leave no track of their existence
