Blender Extra Materials

Hi there,

I’ve found several older threads on this issue however nothing worked for me and I’ve literally tried everything I could think of. Basically I have several objects that I’ve joined with CTRL+J in Blender and I’ve assigned a new material and texture to them (a texture atlas). When I import the .blender file into Unity, instead of having 1 material which should be the texture atlas, I get around 15 other older materials that I used at first, before coming up with the texture atlas. The texture atlas material, which is the only one I see in Blender doesn’t even show up.

I tried the following so far:

  • Delete all the materials from all the objects and import them into unity without joining them and without any materials. I still get a bunch of the older materials
  • Link all the materials and import again without joining. Same thing, I get a ton of materials
  • Delete all the materials, join all the objects, assign a new material (texture atlas) to the joined objects, still Unity shows me a ton of older materials.
  • Go into edit mode after joining, delete my material, create a new one… same thing

Any suggestion would be helpful, thanks!

Sounds like you are just unlinking the materials from the models in blender, and not deleting them. For a material to be deleted, you need to click the X next to them, and nothing in the scene has to reference it for it to be completely removed.

Take a look at this link describing datablocks, which is how materials are stored in blender https://www.blender.org/manual/data_system/data_blocks.html

The easiest way is probably just to turn of material importing on the file in Unity, and manually create and assign a material there.
