What do you think? I want to edit a video add some music maybe some text animations and an image overlay.
I’m comfortable doing this in blender, but is it worth learning after effects?
Or am I just wasting time?

Depends. After Effects isn’t free, but apart from that, it’s much less fiddly than Blender when it comes to editing videos, and has (naturally) more features in that area. I really enjoy working in AE and it’s a powerful package on its own, but if you only have a passing interest in it, I don’t see what the benefit would be long-term if you can already do that in Blender.
If you’re looking for a free video editing software, I’d like to mention Natron. I haven’t tried it out myself, but I’ve heard good things about it.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, my mum’s got creative cloud so I have the full suite, but I just want to do something quick and easy.
Basically, I want to make like a powerpoint presentation in unity, with a click next and back button but have some cool videos which I can make in blender.
Blender it is.
Yeah, in that case I think you’ll do fine with just Blender. After Effects is not hard to learn once you’ve covered the basics, but its rendering options will be very confusing and unintuitive at first. And it’s a heavy-weight program so if you only have a few things you want to edit, it’s kinda overkill.

Yeah the only real issue I found with blender in syncing the video and sound from a quicktime video recording. ( I wanna record my desktop)
But this seemed to sort it.
Is there anything blender does that isn’t like half assed subpar industry standard in workflow and design? It sounds like its in desperate need of a complete overhaul.

Should you still have any problems after that and you have access to the Creative Cloud, I’d suggest looking at Adobe Premiere. That one’s a lot lighter than AE and is usually used for smaller editing work with fewer effects. Good luck!

Concur with krraej - Premiere is lighter and has a bunch of canned transitions for beginner users, that are super simple to just drop into the timeline.
After Effects is an awesome package! I use it nearly every day at my day job, and rarely consider any other software for compositing. It has 3D ability, lighting fx, bones were just added for bone animations, particles, camera and motion tracking, and such simple timeline editing. It’s essentially animated Photoshop.
The one draw back I find with AE is the real-time playback isn’t completely real-time regardless how sooped up your machine is. The frame playback will keep a steady framerate, but you have to do a preview render to see if the audio is synced up accurately.
For this I usually end up dumping from AE into Avid and rolling the audio up perfectly.
But for simple audio files, sound fx, and music with good beats, you can do audio editing in AE pretty simply, because the audio file in the timeline provides the wave form which is easy to see where the highs and lows are at.
It’s a good package to learn and know, especially if you plan to create a bunch of trailers for games.

Save yourself some trouble and use Premiere for video editing if it mostly involves pre recorded clips on a timeline and transitions.
