Blurry Rain

I am trying to replicate the rain drop system used in the AngryBots demo. I have copied across all the relevant resources, generated the rain meshes and set the manager and rainboxes in the scene. I am able to get what appears to be almost correctly functioning rain.

The only problem is that for some reason the drops themselves appear blurry on my version if I compare the two side by side. I am using the same shader. In the editor, if I compare the rain materials across the two projects I find that in the texture preview box (top right), the texture is perhaps twice as blurry in my project. I am quite confident they are the same texture file, they have the same file size, identical import settings and look the same as a texture, the one in my editor merely appears to change once it is added to a material.

Based on what the material texture preview shows, it appears as if the texture is being stretched double the width, and that is the blurry effect I witness both in the editor preview and when the scene is running.

Any ideas as to what might cause the texture to behave this way? The material doesn’t seem to have any settings that differ.

sometimes some shaders only work with forward rendering and some on deffered, and sometimes depends if you have the shader model for it but since you said that it looks one way on angrybots i’m assuming you are good on the shader model.
try to see if you changed the rendering settings. maybe you missed a script related to it? i know that some of their shaders use some scripts to make it work.

Thanks for the reply.

I figured I would post this shot first of what I mean when I say the texture preview in the material looks different.

Both image previews appear equally different (ie, good for theirs and stretched for mine) if I use the diffuse shader on the material aswell so I don’t think that particular issue is shader related. It is possible that the strange preview is unrelated, though it seems likely that it is since the actual result seems to show what might be blurry or width stretched textures.

The difference might not look huge in a still shot, but it is enormous when it is moving. If you paste the URL of the image into a new tab or save it w, it will give you a better look

I am not very familiar with forward and delayed rendering yet so I will look into that.

I am pretty sure I have the correct shader as the rain doesn’t work at all without it.

Not sure about any missing scripts, I will continue to delve into them, in the mean time do you have any idea why the material preview looks so different as I would expect it is independant of most other factors.

EDIT:
I tried deleting everything in the AngryBots scene except for the rain effects and added a new camera at the same position with default settings. Still looks perfect. So I can only assume it isn’t any other special stuff in the scene, if it is some other script affected stuff I have no idea where it is being referenced D:

I found the problem!

Project Settings → Quality → Anisotropic Textures → Forced On

As opposed to per textures. Apparantly this setting does indeed affect the preview of the texture in the material and fixes the problems everywhere when it is turned on.

Hi,

Could you let me know how exactly you managed to copy the rain across? i get errors that the manager script needs fixing.

Many Thanks
