The life of a freelancer (or anyone in this industry really) is an unpredictable one, you’re always on the lookout for jobs but there’s no guarantee you’ll find any and if you do there’s no guarantee you’ll get it. So when there’s nothing to do…what do you do?

Make stock images other stuff for selling! That way you’ll grow as an artist and you’ll have more artistic freedom plus you’ll make some bux! And you’ll get more stuff for your portfolio 
it all adds up!

GraphicRiver.net is my fave, I love all the Envato marketplaces. If you’re competent at WordPress theming or designing static photoshop website templates you could do ThemeForest too.

Im not even sure how to do stock images, Im assuming its just like… icons and button packs

It can be anything, a series of buttons, wallpapers/backgrounds, icons, what have you. Honestly, you never know what people may need.

How about making some nice GUI skins? GUI skins aren’t hard to create, but are time consuming and require an artistic eye to do nicely. Would love to see a series of GUI skins for different genres, ie. cartoon, high tech, rusty/grunge, etc.

That is a very useful niche on the asset store that is surprisingly untapped. Maybe i’ll do that; being a web designer, I love GUI. I would however be furious if the new GUI system made my work obsolete, though. I imagine 3.5 is quite a ways away, though.
