Broken Mesh after skinning in Maya

Hello everybody, I have the following problem:

a friend of mine made a character in Maya and now I am trying to rig and animate it. After he finished modeling, he made the edges smoother and texturized it.

Now when i export the character from Maya to Unity, everything is fine and normal. But as soon as i bind the skin in Maya and export it to Unity, the Mesh is kind of messed up (one eye of the character is not transparent) and the character is not smooth.

Does someone had the same problem and can help me?

As a starting point was construction history deleted before skinning & import? Also, transform frozen on the model?

I would be happy to look at the scene also if you haven’t been able to sort this out. Might be faster than going down the usual suspects list.
