Very relieved and glad to know a warning message is planned. I can confirm no helpful warning message is shown in the latest version - 2018.3.12f1 with a vanilla player build.
To Unity at-large (am not addressing anyone specifically) here’s the death toll for this undocumented behavior. There are 40+ other developers who were clearly impacted but they didn’t include how long they banged their head trying to diagnosis the cause of texture corruption in built players.
Textures messed up in Windows Build
I ran into a problem today that I have never seen before. My game looks fine when playing in the Unity Editor, but the textures are messed up when I play in a standalone Windows build. Both of these screenshots are from the same computer. It is a Windows 10 computer with a GTX 780 card. I have never seen this happen before. Is there something obvious I need to check in my project? Thanks.

Texture problem : Graphical Corruptions - Need Help
Hello all,
As stated on the title, I have a real weird problem showing on textures. After looking everywhere in my scene, and in Unity forums, I still can't figure out how this happens.
Here is the result of my scene in Unity Editor, like I expect to have in build :

I tried this on Unity 5.3.3f1, and 5.3.4f1, and builds on PC 64x.
The graphical corruption only occurs in build, never in editor.
Corruptions shows up only on textur…

But seriously, I gave up on a project a few months ago, experiencing the same issue and thinking, maybe I did something wrong…like seriously wrong. Spent few days reimporting every asset and all.

I spent a month struggling with this issue, blaming the Bakery GPU lightmapper for it, wasting the developer’s time with back and forth debugging, redoing and rebaking my scene lighting like 10 times (baking the scene takes hours), and just now I find this thread, describing the exact issue I have.
